Art and Design

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.
-Pablo Picasso

At Darell, we value and recognise the importance of creativity in a young child’s life. We offer high-quality art and design experiences that engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design, as described by the National Curriculum. The children produce creative work, and become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.  At Darell, we endeavour to ensure that children develop not only their own artistic and design skills but are also familiar with the works of famous artists and designers both contemporary and those recognised in history.
Children at Darell are given many opportunities to explore art and artists. Each year, a resident artist works with the children in school, together exploring different mediums and developing skills. Every two years, we take part in ‘Take One Picture’, a scheme run by The National Gallery that focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms.  Classes frequently visit galleries such as Orleans House Gallery in Richmond and The National Gallery where the children are able to appreciate the art and participate in workshops.
It is our aim at Darell to foster in children a love and appreciation of art as well as the skills to have a go and be successful, which can then be carried through into adulthood.

Design and Technology

At Darell School, we have termly topic themes to deliver our curriculum. This provides the children with opportunities to develop their skills and increase their knowledge within the context of that topic. This ensures they make really positive progress across the curriculum.
Art and Design and technology at Darell School has been developed to encourage creativity, curiosity and problem solving skills. These are all skills which are important to us and form an integral part of our curriculum. It also inspires children to use their imagination and to apply skills from other areas such as mathematics and science.
The children from Reception to Year 6 are all taught Art and Design and Technology, which starts the children early on in their school life to develop their skills in planning, creating and evaluating, as they complete a range of projects using a variety of tools and materials, from painting, construction and sketching to collages and modelling.
Darell School now has a fully functioning food technology space, where all the children have access to its facilities and have the opportunity to prepare and cook different types of foods following recipes.
