The Darell Chess Team have been very busy over the past few months. In March, Sky and Bella qualified for the UK Schools Chess Challenge, which is a five hour competition taking place in schools across the country simultaneously. They both gained 11 points which meant they were just a few points short of qualifying for the UK Megafinal – well done Sky and Bella!
At the beginning of May, Darell were represented by Frederic, Max, Kuba, Sky, Bella, Johan, Alexandros, Anton and Lola at the annual tournament for Richmond State Primary Schools. Darell had two teams, one came 7th overall and the other came 5th. Well done to all of the children that participated, particularly Johan, Alex, Lola and Anton because it was their first tournament and they demonstrated great resilience playing children who were much older than them. Johan even moved up 3 places in the school rankings!
At the end of May, six members of the Chess team were invited to the Unicorn School in Kew to compete against other primary schools in the borough. Frederic, Kuba, Sky, Bella, Johan and Lola took part and they came 3rd! They returned to school proudly wearing their bronze medals. All of the children also had to play a Chess Master and Kuba was awarded an additional medal for being very hard to beat – the Chess Master said, “He’s one to watch!” Well done Kuba!
At each tournament the organisers have commented on the behaviour, great manners and positive attitude of the Darell Chess team. A huge thank you to the staff and parents who make it possible for the team to attend these tournaments.
