Headteacher Message

Hello all,

‘Last Christmas I gave you my heart but the very next day you gave it away.’ There was a point in the KS2 Christmas production where I was transported back to my teenage years and that awkward last dance where you end up dancing with your best mate.  We had the Nativity and the KS2 production this week, and they were both superb.

What it did have:

  • Participation by all. Everybody putting on a performance.
  • Smiling happy children
  • Brave and skilful soloists
  • Plenty of warmth on show
  • Energy and enjoyment
  • An extremely well-behaved and receptive audience

What we did not have;

  • Track backing vocals
  • Children not able to take part
  • Narrators reading from a script

Another mention for the audience and by that I mean you. Thank you for turning up in such great numbers, and thank you for being so supportive of you and all the children performing. We also had the KS1 and KS2 disco yesterday and if your children are not tired this weekend I would like to know why!

Broken record time, but the staff team here have been magnificent. Half of them are fighting off illness, and yet they keep giving. Humbling to be the headteacher of a school with such great staff.

Our attendance has taken a hit these past few weeks due to illness. Please do all you can to get your children into school next week.  If they are unwell, that is fine, but please no sneaky early holidays. Every day missed from school creates gaps in learning. I am a hard taskmaster and learning will be taking place until our children leave the building.

A while back, we canvassed your views in the form of a parent survey and one of the comments noted was about having more curriculum events for parents. We are always looking to improve and this term we have had parents watching phonics lessons in reception and year 1, and next term, we are looking to strengthen partnerships further by holding maths mastery workshops for parents of children in Reception, Year 1 and 2. They are workshops with a difference as you get to work alongside your child. You can sign up using Arbor.  Please take advantage of this opportunity.

Have a lovely restful weekend.

Joe Porter

Letter from the Governors

Dear Parents/Carers and Darell School Community

It has been another very busy term at Darell and it is hard to believe that 2025 is almost over. Time flies and when we are all so busy it is sometimes difficult to take the time to reflect on achievements and successes before we move on to the next challenge. I wanted to take this opportunity to do just that and outline some of the challenges the school continues to face.

We now have a full Governing Body with a wide range of skills and experience (you can find out more about the governors here and we have reorganised the way we work to try to be more efficient and supportive for the school –this is work in progress but with three new Committee Chairs (Elaine, Felisa and Janica) we are well on our way!

Governors are there to support with the School Development Plan priorities and to monitor progress towards those objectives. For Darell the focus this year includes

  1. Improving outcomes in Mathematics across the school – lots of work being done to further enhance Mathematics learning in school. There are some useful workshops for Reception and Key Stage One parents coming up to show parents how to support their children at home and particularly to understand the mathematical language the children use everyday. We had a very interesting discussion in an Achievement and Curriculum Committee meeting about the difference between a square, a rectangle and an oblong!
  2. Improving school attendance – this is a national and Darell priority. There is a direct link between good school attendance and punctuality, and achievement. Children who miss school also miss out on the social experiences that school provides and can find it difficult to maintain friendships. Darell had a high number of persistent absentees last year (below 90% attendance) and are working hard to improve this.
  3. Money, Money, Money – as in all schools (and everywhere else!) income remains the primary challenge, particularly when pupil numbers are small. We are working hard to promote Darell as the school of choice in the local area and anything you can do to support this is much appreciated! We are also looking at ways to make the most of the school building which is now available for lettings (the hall is great for birthday parties!). Please contact the school office if you want to find out more.

Finally, the real strength and real USP of the school – the wonderful Darell staff! It is very unusual (particularly in London) to find such a stable and committed staff team as there is at Darell. Mr Porter is now the longest serving Headteacher in this area (and we want to keep it that way!) and the fact that the whole staff team all know every child so well is such a credit to the school – the individual greeting, the chat at playtime about a particular interest or the goodbye at the end of the school day help to make Darell the special place that it is where everyone is welcomed!

I would like to thank you all for your support during the last term and to wish everyone a very happy festive season and best wishes for 2026!

With kind regards

Laura Morgan and the Governors of Darell Primary School

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - In Where the Wild Things Are, what 'mischief' does Max make? (He hammers a nail into the wall and chases the dog with a fork) Why do you think Max feels angry? What makes him feel better at the end of the story? (being back in his own room with his supper waiting for him) What helps you feel better when you are angry?

Year 1 – Who would you find behind the little red door if you knocked on it three times? (a little girl called Olivia) Where would you find a mouse called Mouse? (at the bottom of the garden tucked inside an oak tree)

Year 2 – Do you think the tiger was really in Nora's garden? Why? Why not?

Year 3 – What was your favourite part of 'How the Stars Came to Be'? Why?

Year 4 –  If you could talk to the animals like Dr Dolittle, but were only allowed to speak to one species of animal, which would you pick?

Year 5 – ‘Treason’ – What has happened to Brother John? Why?

Year 6 - Do you think Olive and Esther will ever be friends?
