Headteacher Message

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well.  I have just returned from giving a tour to a family who will be joining our community next week.  They have recently arrived from Montreal in Canada and were really impressed with the school.  Their child is a native French speaker, and they were really pleased to hear about the diversity at Darell School.  Empathy is so important, and I always try and view things from different perspectives.  I was thinking about this new Year 2 child and what they must be feeling.  Arriving in a new country and not having English as your first language and then having to start a brand-new school.  It must be daunting.  Fortunately, they have come to the right place. Our children are so used to welcoming new arrivals you can actually see the warmth on their faces. They embrace the new and ensure that any new arrivals quickly feel part of the class. This year we have had approximately 30 children arrive since September.  I can only see this as a positive as each one of those children has added to the rich tapestry that makes up this amazing school.

Sports day.  What can we say? I was there all day and the atmosphere was brilliant.  Everyone having a go, support coming from all angles and children having fun. Thank you all for your support.

I also would like to thank those parents who have taken up the mantle of creating a parent body to support the school.  I began this headship during the coronavirus epidemic and while always wanting an active parent body have completely understood why it has been a challenge.  No more. It will be small steps to begin with, but there are some extremely intelligent and committed parents involved, and I believe that it will evolve into something special.

My wife has gone away for the weekend, and I was about to talk to the children about it being ‘Daddy Day Care.’ I swiftly stopped myself as actually it is just being a parent and no fuss should be made!  I hope you enjoy the weekend with your children as much as I intend to.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In our story, One Day On Our Blue Planet, can you name any countries in the world that have a savanna? What would the savanna look like? Can you remember why?

Peake - Why did the villagers from a nearby island ask for the Beast's help? What do you think the villagers and the Beast learned? (that things are often not as scary as they might seem). Can you think of a time when you have shown bravery?

Weir - Where do you think the Polar Bear has come from? Where do you think it might be going?

Thunberg - How will the farmers get rid of the Iron Man, what is their plan?

Darwin - If you were going to write a story about Macavity the mystery cat who was going to steal something really valuable, what would it be?

Attenborough - What do we find out about Tim in the Highwayman? What will you add to the character when you write your own narrative based on how Tim experiences the events at the start of the poem? Why is Tim important to the plot of the poem?

Parks - Why is Macbeth known as 'The Scottish Play'?
