Headteacher Message

Hello all,

What a week.  I have just come downstairs from watching the Debatemate team work with our Year 5 and 6 children.  They are fine-tuning their debating skills before shortly going into battle with another school.  I was also supervising the card trading club.  You may or may not know that a number of our children love to collect Pokemon cards.  I am going to be very honest here, I am not sure what a Pikachu or Gorganzoid is but I do recognise that they really enjoy it. I had a good idea, which like many things in life didn’t quite work.  I had said that cards were allowed in school on a Friday to be traded and have fun.  In reality, without the necessary regulatory boards in place, it didn’t work.  Cards were getting into the classroom and teachers weren't altogether happy.  This is where democracy came to my aid.  I was going to ban cards. Simple solution. Problem solved (in all honesty this did not quite sit right with me as they are developing a number of skills when trading with others). I put it to the democratically elected school council and told them I would abide by their decision.  They voted overwhelmingly to keep cards in school with the understanding that they would be dropped off at the office at the start of the day and collected at the end. Bingo!  What is lovely about the club is that there are children from 2,3,4,5 and 6 and the interaction they have is lovely.

This week I was lucky enough to visit another London school. It was Chesterton Primary School in Battersea. Myself and Emma Claridge spent the morning there looking at their outstanding phonic provision.  It is lovely to get out and about, and we came back buzzing with ideas to further improve our phonic phonics across the school.  This sort of school to school collaboration is so useful.  We currently have a number of schools queueing up to come and look at our Nurture provision.  We will always strive to get better at all that we do and in the process help other schools to do the same.

For instance, we have a really nice library but (and I am not competitive) it was not quite at the exceptional standard of Chesterton's.  The space has so much potential, and we intend to utilise it.  This is where you come in. As you know school budgets are very tight, we simply do not have the money for a project of this sort.  Therefore, we are going to make ‘The New Darell Library’ our fundraising project.  All the money we raise through Christmas fairs etc. will go towards this.  When I say library I also mean books, lots of new books. We will be looking for donations towards this project.  I am acutely aware that these are difficult economic times for us all and there is zero expectation regarding this - everything is a bonus. I will be releasing details of how to do this shortly.

The fact that we currently have a working library is due to the hard work our volunteer librarian, Kathleen Gaster.  She has a long association with the school and has ploughed a lone furrow for a number of years but no longer because this is going to be a whole community effort.

With that rallying call complete, I am off to deliver our celebration assembly accompanied by one of Kool and The Gangs greatest tunes.  A lovely way to dance into the weekend.  Have a lovely weekend.

Nativity!

The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are working hard to prepare for this year’s Christmas show, ‘Christmas with the Aliens’.  Our performance will be on Thursday, 15th December at 9.30 am.

We are limiting the number of tickets available to two per family. If you have babies or toddlers, please feel free to bring them along to watch the performance.

Tickets need to be booked in advance. Next week, you will receive details of how you can book your tickets.

We look forward to seeing you at our performance.

Strathmore - Astra Class

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In September 2022 Strathmore opened a class which is co-located with Darell Primary and Nursery School. This is a small group of children aged 4 – 7 who have complex learning difficulties including those with an additional diagnosis of autism.

Your son/daughter may be given the opportunity to engage in inclusion activities between Darell and Strathmore School.  This may include:

  • Joining playtimes
  • Joint library visits and a having reading buddy
  • Participating in joint projects
  • Joining in with continuous provision sessions

As part of the inclusion process, Strathmore teachers have visited the class of your son/daughter to discuss the learners at Strathmore and why it is important that we have opportunities to interact with each other.

As opportunities arise, we would be delighted if your son/daughter would like to join us to play such an active part in our school life and want to support our students to communicate, interact, form relationships, and have fun with peers.

All Strathmore learners will be supported by a familiar adult from Strathmore school and inclusion programmes will be planned to ensure that inclusion is successful.

I would like to thank you and your son/daughter very much for supporting this brilliant programme and we are looking forward to working together!

If you have any questions or would like to find out more, please do not hesitate to contact me via the below email.

Thank you again for your support!

Kindest regards,

Amy Upton – Astra Class Teacher Strathmore @ Darell

Spend time in Nature!
Why not make the most of what autumn has to offer?

Colours, smells, sounds… everything changes at autumn time! The golds, reds, purples, russets and oranges that provide a burst of joy before the winter months are particularly vivid this year. Spending time in nature outdoors can help improve your mood and reduce feelings of stress and anger.

Try to pay attention to your surroundings and find things to see, hear, taste, smell and touch. Lots of people find that being with animals is calming and enjoyable. You could try pet-sitting or dog walking, feed birds from your window, or visit a local community farm. You can even bring nature indoors! This can give you the benefits of nature without having to go to a park or public garden. You could buy flowers, potted plants or seeds for growing on your window sill. Or you could collect natural materials from outdoors, such as leaves, flowers, feathers, and use them to decorate your living space.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In the Diwali story of 'Rama and Sita', how does Ravanna trick Sita, and how does Rama rescue Sita?

Peake - Who was Lulu's favourite toy? What made him so special?

Weir - What do you predict will happen inside the Art Gallery? What do you think Claude and Sir Bobblysock will do there?

Newton - Which city will Claude visit next?

Thunberg - What do you think the giant is going to do? Why do you think he is being so selfish?

Darwin - Would you want to be married to a monarch like Mufaro’s daughters? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Attenborough - Why is the children’s guide book to Hampton Court called “Power Palace”?

Parks - ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ – What are you (as Olive) going to include in your honest letter home to Mother?
