Headteacher Message

Dear all,

I hope you are all well. Many of you will have seen the news regarding the conflict in the Ukraine. It is very real to us as a school as we have members of our community who originate from Ukraine. This is not the arena to talk politics but I find it difficult not to feel deep sadness regarding the human cost of war. The reason I am talking to you about this is because we do not exist in a void and some children within the school are talking about the crisis. It is on all the news cycles and children tend to pick up on these matters. It may seem counterintuitive but I actually believe it is better to talk to your children if they ask about this. This stops misconceptions developing and will reassure your children. A good source of age appropriate information is BBC Newsround. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround)

Many of you will have seen the government announcement regarding the ending of legal coronavirus restrictions.  I know that this news will be daunting to some and want to assure you that we will continue to keep your children as safe as possible within the context that we have been placed.  Here is an outline of the changes from Thursday 24 February.

  • Self-isolation for people who test positive for Covid will end but they will still be advised to stay at home and avoid contact with others for at least five
  • Routine contact tracing will end
  • People with Covid symptoms will be asked to exercise personal responsibility when deciding whether to stay at home, until then they are still advised to do so.
  • The Government has placed great emphasis on personal responsibility so when deciding whether your child should attend school, please use the same judgment as you would for any infectious condition.

As a school we will continue to:

  • Ensure school remains extremely well-ventilated
  • Allow face coverings to be worn if an individual so wishes
  • Continue with our vigorous hand washing regimes.
  • Encourage personal responsibility by asking those clearly unwell to stay at home to reduce infection rates.

This has been quite a serious newsletter and I want to assure you that there has been a lot of joy in the school this week particularly during the impromptu dance off held at lunch time.  The sun has come out and the days are getting longer so please get out there and enjoy time with your precious families.

Curriculum

In the second part of our focus on curriculum, I wanted to share the development of children's writing at school. In the photos below, I have included examples of some fantastic work produced by children in Year 6. This is the end of the children's writing journey with us. The children's writing journey begins from their early development of motor skills, through to initial mark making, developing their understanding of phonics and beginning to write more extended pieces. As ever, we are incredibly proud of what the children in school produce and what to celebrate the exceptionally high calibre of work that children at Darell complete.

Easy banana pancakes

Turn overripe, blackened bananas into sweet and fluffy American-style pancakes. Serve with syrup and crunchy, toasted pecan nuts as a delicious brunch treat!

Pancakes on plates with banana slices and syrup

Ingredients

  • 350g self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder?
  • 2 very ripe bananas
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 250ml whole milk
  • Butter, for frying

To serve

  • 2 just ripe bananas, sliced
  • Maple syrup (optional)
  • Pecan halves, toasted and roughly chopped (optional)

Method

STEP 1

Sieve the flour, baking powder and a generous pinch of salt into a large bowl. In a separate mixing bowl, mash the very ripe bananas with a fork until smooth, then whisk in the eggs, vanilla extract and milk. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, tip in the wet ingredients and swiftly whisk together to create a smooth, silky batter.

STEP 2

Heat a little knob of butter in a large non-stick pan over a medium heat. Add 2-3 tbsp of the batter to the pan and cook for several minutes, or until small bubbles start appearing on the surface. Flip the pancake over and cook for 1-2 mins on the other side. Repeat with the remaining batter, keeping the pancakes warm in a low oven.

STEP 3

Stack the pancakes on plates and top with the banana slices, a glug of sticky maple syrup and a handful of pecan nuts, if you like.

Lava Lamp

Lava lamps are a great sensory stimulus for little ones. They’ll also show big kids the science behind the cool chemical reactions. Making a lava lamp might seem like a big step forward if you’re not a keen crafter. But this DIY tutorial is really easy to follow and requires mostly regular kitchen items to get stuck in.

You will need:

  • Vegetable oil
  • Food colouring
  • Small cup
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • 1L bottle or cup
  • Spoon

How to make your own lava lamp

1. Add the baking soda

In your 1L bottle or cup, add three tablespoons of baking soda.

2. Add the oil

Fill 2/3 of your bottle or cup with the vegetable oil, making sure it rests on top of the baking soda and doesn’t mix with it.

3. Mix the vinegar and the food colouring

In the other, smaller container add some vinegar and three drops of your food colouring.

TIP: Use different coloured food colouring with every new bottle, or mix some together (like blue and red) to create new colours that you often can’t buy. Or instead of food colouring, add some silver glitter!

4. Sit back and watch

Now, add your solution of vinegar and food colouring to the big 1L container, slowly, and watch what happens!

Place either your phone torch or a flat torch underneath you bottle to light up the bottom and achieve that famous lava lamp glow.
