Headteacher Message

Hello all,

Today I observed a strange phenomenon - a shiny golden disc in the sky! It was fantastic to have the sun shining whilst I was out in the playground with Key Stage 2 today. The playground can be a busy and sometimes noisy place - especially on a Friday when we have music playing for the children (and staff) to show off their best moves. However, I spent a full hour in the playground and I have to say it was extremely enjoyable to spend some quality time with the children. They played really well together and it was fantastic to see the way the children incorporated each other into the games they were playing. We have worked hard to ensure that the playground is a happy place and have shared the rules below with our children.

As I write this newsletter, I am looking ahead to our weekly reading assembly. Over the start of this term, it has been a real pleasure to begin giving out reading book prizes to children who have reached 100 dots in their reading records. As a school, we remain committed to ensuring that all of our children develop their love of reading. Just by reading aloud regularly to children, research shows that their comprehension of texts and enjoyment of stories can grow rapidly. Please find some time to read with your child this weekend.

Finally, on Tuesday 1st February, we have another safeguarding training session for parents. If you are available to attend on Tuesday morning, please sign up using the Google Form below. Doing this training is vital for us as a school as it enables us to have many more volunteers in school to read with our children. Please sign up if you can. Have a great weekend with your families.

Safeguarding Training

We are very excited to be able to welcome you back in to school to volunteer in a number of different capacities. We are particularly keen to have volunteers come in to school and hear children read. If you would like to volunteer in school, you need to hold a current DBS check and have recently attended safeguarding training held by the school. In order to refresh this training, Mr Gilbert and Mrs Claridge are pleased to offer an in person training session on Tuesday, 1st February at 9:15 in the hall.

Message in a bottle!

What are you most looking forward to this year? As a family, write down 2 or 3 (or more!) things that you are looking forward to in 2022. You can do this collectively or have individual ideas. Then roll them up and put them in a bottle. You can check these at the end of the year. It’s good to look forward to things and have dreams!

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In Lost and Found the boy couldn't sleep because he felt disappointed and worried. If you felt like this, who could you talk to?

Peake - Explain how the children in the school treated Beegu. How does this compare to how the adults treated her?

Weir - How many stars would you give Snow White in New York? Who would you recommend it to and why?

Walker - The Littlest Bear and Littlest Wolf became best friends.  What makes a good friend?

Newton - What has Floyd thrown into the tree so far, and what has happened to everything?

Thunberg - Why did Arthur collect the special ingredients? What happened to them?

Darwin - If you were on a deserted island, which ocean would you like your island to be in and why.

Attenborough - If you would travel to Russia, where would you like to go? What would you like to see or experience?

Parks - How would you describe the characteristics of the four children based on the first chapter?

Can you describe the emotions felt by Lucy as she explores the wardrobe for the first time?

This week, our Year 1 geographers went out for a walk around the school to explore the local area. When they returned to school, they produced a class word cloud of the feature names they had gathered before and after the walk. They then compared the difference #Richmond #Kew https://t.co/yaoGtKuTa2

Cooking & Craft Corner

Pizza crumpets

Ingredients

  • 6 crumpets
  • 4 tbsp passata
  • 4 tbsp ketchup
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 75g cheddar cheese , grated
  • Toppings of your choice

Method
Heat the grill to high. Lightly toast the crumpets in a toaster or under the grill. Meanwhile, mix the passata, ketchup and oregano together in a bowl. Season. Chop your chosen toppings into small pieces – young children can tear basil, or chop soft veg in a cup using safety scissors.

Line a baking tray with foil. Spread the sauce over the crumpets, then top with the veg and cheese. Arrange on the tray and grill for 3-4 mins, until the cheese is golden and bubbling. Leave to cool slightly before eating.

DIY Foam Paint

Ingredients

  • Shaving foam
  • PVA glue
  • Food colouring
  • Zip lock bag
  • card

Making foam paint is as easy as it gets. You’ve got your shaving cream, your PVA glue and your food colouring – that’s it!

Method

Mix equal parts shaving cream and glue into a ziplock bag, add your desired food colouring and then, with the bag sealed, squish the bag together until all your ingredients are nicely mixed together.

When you are ready to start simply cut off a corner at the bottom of the bag and use like you’re piping icing.

Once the art has been completed, set aside, so the foam can dry and solidify overnight.
