Headteacher Message

Hello all,

A very brief word from me today. This afternoon I was called to my daughters school as she was unwell and I had to leave school immediately to pick her up.  Incidents like this help to give me perspective.  Sometimes I/we focus so much on work that we neglect to see the real magic before our eyes.  That is our children. Being there for her this afternoon is actually more important than finishing my paperwork for the week. I have tag teamed with my wife and I am back at work.  Why am I telling you this?  Well, if possible just take a bit of time this weekend to reflect on how wonderful your children are. They challenge us on a daily basis but they are worth every minute.

As part of our learning partnership we want to share our half termly planning outlines with you.  They are published here on the website. Please take a look.

https://www.darell.richmond.sch.uk/page/?title=Curriculum+Newsletters&pid=340

They look great and they give you lots of information about what your child will be studying this term including the key texts they will be exploring.

Have a lovely weekend.

Joe Porter

Wellbeing

January can often be a difficult month for many people—Christmas is over, the weather is cold with winter stretching ahead of us still and the nights are longer. Many of the things that we do to cheer ourselves up (walks in the countryside, outdoor exercise, playing in the park, enjoying the sunshine …) are all harder to achieve.

Beating the winter blues

It's thought the winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects around 2 million people in the UK and more than 12 million people across northern Europe. It can affect people of any age, including children.

Key symptoms:

  • depression
  • sleep problems
  • lethargy
  • overeating
  • irritability
  • feeling down and unsociable

According to Sue Pavlovich of the Seasonal Affective Disorder Association (SADA), these 10 tips could help. "Everyone's affected differently by SAD, so what works for one person won't for another," she says. "But there's usually something that will help, so don't give up if the first remedy you try doesn't work. Just keep trying."

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - What animal will you find in Antarctica?

Can you tell me what you have learnt about penguins? I know...

Peake - Where do you think Beegu has come from? Explain how you know.  How do you think Beegu might be feeling at the beginning of the story?

Weir - What do you think will happen to the evil Stepmother next?

Walker - Why did the boy want to help the penguin find his way home??

Newton - What did Floyd do with Mitch the cat? Why?

Thunberg - How did the Enormous crocodile trick the children?

Darwin - If you were water, would you travel furthest around the world as a solid (ice or snow), liquid (water) or gas (vapour)?

Attenborough - What do you think Zuby wants the shadow moth to help return to his kind?
Do you think Imogen and Marie are the right helpers for the shadow moth’s quest??

Parks - Can you explain what Clara and Eldorath have in common?

Why does Clara see Gaynah whilst others don't?

How does Clara manage to lay the ghost of Gaynah to rest?
