Headteacher Message

Hello all,

I hope you are all well.  When I first came into teaching I imagined that the end of the summer term would be a time for winding down as we eased towards the break.  20+ years in and I now know this could not be further from the truth.  Writing reports, capturing data, organising transitions and productions means that if anything, the workload increases as we move to the end of term. There is definitely a sense of fatigue amongst the staff but to their eternal credit your children would not know this. They are still planning and delivering rich learning experiences for your children. Just a minute ago I had a bespoke salad made by Year 5 pupils delivered to my desk.  It was lovely if a bit radish heavy!  On top of this, our Key Stage 2 children have been diligently working on TT rockstars to compete in this week’s London Rocks competition. Darell is currently proudly sitting in the top 20 of all schools in London! Incredible! We also have Nursery, Reception and Mozart class attending Kew Gardens all day today.  It is so lovely to have our children out and about.

I also wanted to inform you that we have changed our school meals provider.  Without going into too much detail I feel very positive about this change.  I am really looking forward to exploring the new menu and ensuring that our children get the best food possible at lunchtime.  There is further information about this in the newsletter.

We will be holding adapted sports days next week and guidelines regarding this will be sent to you.  The events span most of the week with each class having an allocated day when they will complete their activities.  While the races will be competitive, we are not giving out awards and we just want our children to enjoy being physical and most importantly, we want them to have some fun with their friends.  We are trying our best to adapt all of our planned events. While we recognise that they may not be the same as previous years, we are doing our best to maintain the spirit of these events. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the Year 6 end of year production outside in the playground.  If it is anywhere near as lively as their disco was on Wednesday evening then we could be in for a good show!  On that note, it is worth mentioning that their behaviour at this event was exemplary and a credit to them, their parents and the school.  I had better go now as I pledged that I would write a Headteacher’s comment on every single report written and I need to get a move on.  Have a lovely weekend, dodge the showers and enjoy time with your lovely families.

Signs something is wrong

Around 1 in 8 children and young people experience behavioural or emotional problems growing up. For some, these will resolve with time, while others will need professional support.

It can be difficult to know if there is something upsetting a child or young person, but there are ways to spot when something's wrong. Look out for:

  • significant changes in behaviour
  • ongoing difficulty sleeping
  • withdrawing from social situations
  • not wanting to do things they usually like
  • self-harm or neglecting themselves

Remember, everyone feels low, angry or anxious at times. But when these changes last for a long time or are significantly affecting them, it might be time to get professional help.

You know your child better than anyone so, if you're worried, first think if there has been a significant, lasting change in their behaviour.

This could be at home, school or college; with others or on their own; or in relation to specific events or changes in their life.

If you're concerned or unsure, there is lots of support out there, including professional help in the support section of this page.

MindEd for Families also has information explaining some common behavioural problems in different age groups.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Packham - What would you do if you turned into a beautiful butterfly?

Peake - Think of three adjectives to describe the whale's personality. Think of three adjectives to describe the snail's personality.

Weir - What is your favourite polar bear fact?

Mozart - How can we help to take care of our world?

Newton - How is sound made in your ear?

Thunberg - Why do you think that Billie Jean King is someone who has made a difference??

Darwin - If you could talk to the animals like Doctor Dolittle, what would you want to talk them about?

Attenborough - What did we find out about how the Benin kingdom was ruled?

Who do you think Ada is in our book Children of the Benin Kingdom? What makes you think that?

Parks - Can you explain the plan (the greatest idea in the world) to reunite Ahmet and his family??

Do you see any potential issues with the greatest idea in the world?

Kew Archives

There are two trails, one is a nature trail aimed at ages 5-7 and the other is a digital, immersive adventure trail aimed for ages 8-11. We’re excited to offer our outdoor spaces to local families this summer and would be grateful if your school would consider helping us spread the word via your end of term letters/emails to parents - if your school produces any.

The National Archives is based at the end of Bessant Drive, just 1 minute from the towpath along the Thames. We are one of the world’s largest archives, and the official archive of the UK government for England and Wales. We are free and open to curious people of all ages – our collection holds millions of stories that span 1,000 years!
