Newsletter 35 – Friday, 25th June 2021

Headteacher Message

Hello all,

Well that was the week that was.  As you will know we had to send home three classes at the start of the week because of suspected coronavirus. Thankfully all the PCR tests were negative, and we were quickly able to return all classes to school.  I have to thank a number of people for their support this week.  Firstly thank you to all the parents involved.  Without fail all parents responded in an understanding and calm manner and we were able to ensure that everyone was safely at home.  Next I need to thank the staff.  At one stage we had over 20 staff out isolating and, as is the way at Darell, everyone stepped up and delivered.  Dinners, laptops, lessons, breaktimes, home learning were all delivered.  Lastly but very definitely not least the children to whom this was the most disruptive.  I had hoped that by now I would not be having to mention Coronavirus in my newsletter. But we are where we are.  Local cases are on the rise.  You can see from the table below the extent to which this is the case.

The graph below shows that we are not at the stage we were in the new year, but it is concerning nonetheless.  This variant does seem to be more transmissible and does seem to be infecting the younger age groups.

The purple line represents Richmond.  The green line represents Kingston.  As a school I remain very happy with the safety measures we have in place and we still have not had to close a bubble for a confirmed case.  I suppose I am highlighting this to urge you to remain as safe as you can possibly be.  The decisions that you make outside of school can and will affect those in school.  I was at a Headteachers meeting this week with our two local MPs.  The single biggest request was that schools be given timely advice about what September will look like.  I will let you know as soon as I do.  We will get there. In the meantime we are going to trial a new way of you notifying us if you or a member of your family receives a positive test.  You will shortly receive a text message from Darell School.  If you need to inform us regarding anything Covid please reply to this text and I will receive notification.  This will allow us to get organised over the weekend and ensure that all involved are informed as soon as possible.

I promise that my newsletter next week will be of a more uplifting nature.  I remain an optimist and even at the end of a challenging week both personally and professionally I will reflect on how well the school community navigated the challenges we have faced this week and what a great team we have here at Darell.  Have a lovely weekend.  Be kind to yourself, your families and friends and stay safe.

As you may know I am fundraising and this weekend is the walk up Snowdon. Incredibly, my friend Mark and I have managed to raise £2500 so far for the Royal Marsden. We are so grateful for all the sponsorship we have received, thank you! If you are able to sponsor us then please follow the link below. All money will go to an incredible cause. Finally, please be nice to me when you see me on Tuesday as I think I may be a little tired!

Wellbeing

Having good mental health helps us relax more, achieve more and enjoy our lives more. We have expert advice and practical tips to help you look after your mental health and wellbeing.

Top tips to support children and young people

Be there to listen
Regularly ask how they're doing so they get used to talking about their feelings and know there's always someone to listen if they want it. Find out how to create a space where they will open up.

Support them through difficulties
Pay attention to their emotions and behaviour, and try to help them work through difficulties. It's not always easy when faced with challenging behaviour, but try to help them understand what they're feeling and why.

Stay involved in their life
Show interest in their life and the things important to them. It not only helps them value who they are but also makes it easier for you to spot problems and support them.

Encourage their interests
Being active or creative, learning new things and being a part of a team help connect us with others and are important ways we can all help our mental health. Support and encourage them to explore their interests, whatever they are.

Take what they say seriously
Listening to and valuing what they say, without judging their feelings, in turn makes them feel valued. Consider how to help them process and work through their emotions in a more constructive way.

Build positive routines
We know it still may not be easy, but try to reintroduce structure around regular routines, healthy eating and exercise. A good night's sleep is also really important – try to get them back into routines that fit with school or college.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Packham - What is a chrysalis and what will happen to it?

Peake - Why do you think Noi's dad was at the lighthouse? What might dad have been thinking or feeling when he saw Noi?

Weir - What would your island be like? Who would you like to take there?

Mozart - Timothy Pope is looking out into the night with his telescope.  Is that really a shark he can see? What else could it be?

Newton - What questions might the reporters ask the Lonely Beast?

Thunberg - If you had a nightmare like Omar what would you do to calm yourself?

Darwin - If you lived in the USA in the 1950s like Emma Jane from the book ‘The Hard Times Jar’, would you march against segregation?

Attenborough - Which is your favourite verse of the Highwayman? Why?

Parks - Can you explain what has happened to the members Ahmet's family?

What has happened in the story to leave the narrator and their friends in a race against time?
