Headteacher Message

Hello all,

I hope you are all well.  This week I am going to start with a picture.

I was working on a ‘hot desk’ when two Year 5 children knocked on the door and asked if they could place a ‘Microbit’ into my office. I asked what it was and they explained to me that they were data collecting and they were collecting room temperatures across the school.  Like good scientists, within two minutes they returned to tell me that they wanted to place another sensor in the room to ensure that the results were accurate.  Apparently they had programmed the sensor to do this.  I love this on so many levels. 1.  The quality of teaching that was evident in them being able to programme this.  2. The level of enthusiasm and skill that was shown by the children. 3. The fact that our investment in a chromebook for all was facilitating these experiences. From the very beginning of this investment I wanted it to result in our children being fluent in computing by the time that they leave us.  It is great to see that we are on our way to achieving this.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the parent teacher meetings.  It was constructive and useful.  Here is a summary of responses.

While this is only reflective of a small sample of parents the results are interesting.  What it has led me to believe is that in the future we should consider offering you both options.  We will keep you informed about this.

This week, it has been fantastic to see children in school learning about how Eid is celebrated. I would like to extend  my warmest wishes to all of our pupils and families who have been celebrating the end of Ramadan. Eid Mubarak to all those who celebrated Eid al-Fitr.

The weather looks a bit iffy at the weekend so, please consider waterproofs. Get yourselves out there and have a lovely weekend with your precious families.

Wellbeing

We just wanted to remind everyone that here at Darell Primary and Nursery school we feel that wellbeing, including your physical and mental health are extremely important. We want to support the whole family during this time.
It is important that our parents and carers feel supported and well in themselves so the tips and links you will find within this section are to support adults and children.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Packham - Why was the hen so special? What was her connection to Jack?

Peake - What would have happened if the Lonely Beast had not crept out of the park in the middle of the night?

Weir - What do you predict will happen next in 'The Night Gardener'? What do you think William will do? What would you do if it were you?

Mozart - What happen to Mr Gumpy's motor car and how did the characters help him?

Newton - When the beast feels lonely, what does he decide to do?

Thunberg - What would you say to the sleeping man to convince him to save the rainforest?

Darwin - Paul Erdosh won a Nobel prize for his maths.

If you were to win a Nobel prize, what would you want it to be for?

Attenborough - Do you think the Heart of the Mountain should be returned to the Skret?

Parks - Why do you think that Ahmet has had to leave his home? What is a refugee?

 Online Safety

it's never easy to know how to keep our children safe when they aren't with us, and sometimes even when are, if we don't know what's happening on their devices. Who are they talking to, what are they doing, are they okay? If you need help to find some answers, don't despair... follow the link below for help.

Summer Term Cake Sales - Volunteers needed. Can you help?
We know the children love the Darell cake sales and the PSA feel that these events are an important way to help keep the Darell community spirit thriving.  With this in mind, we are planning several cake sales through the summer term.  As well as being fun events, the sales help towards PSA fundraising and so benefit all the children at Darell.

In order for these events to go ahead, we need volunteers to set up and run the stalls.  If you would like to volunteer, please contact us through Classlist or via your class rep.  We are currently struggling to get enough volunteers and so would very much appreciate your support.  This is just half an hour of your time and a fun opportunity to engage with other parents as well as the children.

Special Thanks

We are very grateful to Laura Edgar and Kelly Doel for their generous donations to the PSA. Thank you to all the volunteers, who spent their time to make the movie night happen.
