Headteacher Message

Hello all,

It has been a lovely return from the Easter break. I want to tell you about something that I saw today that warmed my heart. I was in the playground supervising a one on one basketball competition (jack of all trades master of none) and I saw the most lovely interaction between two of our children.  I could have said a child from our SRP and a child from the mainstream, but this is not how we view our children. We are all part of one happy family. Well, like most families, we have our moments but the quality of relationships across the school make this a great place to be. Anyway, a child from our SRP was watching the game and one of our Year 6 boys recognised that he might want to play. He took himself out of the game, spoke to the boy, and held his hand as he waited in line for his turn. He encouraged and supported him as he played. He did not win his 1:1 basketball match but bounded back to his Year 6 friend to receive a high five and more encouragement. This was totally unprompted and spoke to the kindness and open hearts that our children have. At that moment, I thought we must do something right; it is not us, but the kindness that exists within all our children. We just provide an environment where they can show this love.

I will be sending out an appeal next week asking you for some financial support. Unlike most schools locally and nationally, I have avoided appealing to you all in this way, but we could really do with your support.  Budgets are tighter than ever, and we are having to exhaust all avenues to continue to maintain our excellent provision. I am acutely aware that this will not be possible for some of our families and this is not a problem at all. Please look out for the correspondence.

Our attendance this week has been good. Please keep up the good work.

Joe Porter

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - In our story, 'Lulu Meets the Bees', why does Lulu think bees are 'amazing?’ (They have ‘different jobs’: they spread pollen to make more flowers, they do a clever dance to tell other bees where to find the best flowers, they make honey from nectar).

Year 1 – Which Bird and Bear story did you enjoy the most: The Flower or The Picnic? Explain why.

Year 2 - What other words could you use instead of ‘colossal’?

Year 3 - Which myth have you most enjoyed reading this week and why? Are there any other myths you would like to read?

Year 4 -  Reading question: How would you describe Edward Tulane?

Year 5 -  ‘Journey to Jo’burg’ -  Why did Naledi and Tiro decide to go on a journey to Johannesburg?

Year 6 - What do you think Fritz’s story will be about?

SRP 2 - How does the beast feel at the beginning of the story?  Why do you think this is?
