Headteacher Message

Hello all,

The appliance of Science. Zanussi. I am very much showing my age there and only those of a certain age will remember this advert. The reason I have opened with Science is that it has been Science this week at Darell School and curiosity has been the key world. Science week actually kicked off last Friday with the visit of some fascinating creatures to Reception. Of course, I had to have a turn!

We are indebted to resident vet and parent, Felisa Saliveras, for bringing these animals into school. Awe and wonder. This week I was in Year 6 as they interrogated 3 young vets as part of a webinar about careers in this sphere. Year 5 made space rovers in the process of testing what vehicles would be suitable for the moon. Year 4 devised and investigated some big questions generated by the pupils themselves. One being, why do cats' eyes reflect light in the dark? Year 3 were checking whether toast always landed butter side up! Year 2 investigated the life cycles of animals, including humans, and then practised their scientific drawings.  Year 1 investigated whether the wind always blows in one direction.  I have just returned from assembly where their craft-based wind vanes were shown to all. Ribbons everywhere!

I would also like to say a big thank you to Corinne Thomas for organising this week. Our staff wear many hats and, as well as being the best Reception teacher and EYFS lead in Southern England, Mrs Thomas is the curator of curiosity in the form of our Science lead. I really hope you all have a lovely weekend.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - In our story, 'On the Way Back Home,' why did the boy get stuck on the moon? (his plane ran out of petrol) Why did the Martian get stuck on the moon? (his engine had broken down)

Why do the boy and the Martian make friends? (because they both need each other's help to get back home?) How did they help one another? (the boy brought petrol and a spanner back from Earth to fix the Martian's engine, the Martian lowered a rope and pulled the boy back up to the moon, then he put petrol in the boy's tank)

Year 1 – What are some of the things the wind blows over in the story Blow, Wind, Blow?

Year 2 - Which migration story from 'We Travel So Far' is your favourite? Why?

Year 3 - Do you think that Icarus was ridiculous? What do you think he should have done differently?

Year 4 -  Which are more interesting characters? Monsters or Heroes?

Year 5 - ‘Secrets of a Sun King – What clues are there in the story that link to the real historical theories around King Tutankhamun’s death?

Year 6 - If you rewrote the story from the moment Michael gets washed into the sea, how would you continue it?

SRP 2 - Which objects that Floyd throws surprised you the most?
