Headteacher Message

Hello all,

Hope you are well. I wanted to give you a half termly update regarding the school. It may have rained every single day this half term but the sun has shone inside and around this school.

Some things to celebrate.

  • Sporting victories over Marshgate and other larger schools. It looks at though our netball team will be progressing from the group stages to the knockout stages. Thank you to all staff and parents who have supported.

  • Enrichment at Darell school. Debate mate, Rockbandz and a recent Maths group visit into London are some of the recent highlights.

  • Excellence and inclusion. This morning I heard about a Reception SRP child having success in mainstream maths lessons. Integration is so established at Darell and it makes me very, very happy. Diversity is our strength.

  • Reception numbers. We have defied the local birth rate and competition from other schools and are looking at 24 first choice places for next year. This is significant financially and reputationally. Every child

  • An active and lovely parent group who are live our values and are great supporters of the school.

  • Our children. The reason we all get up in the morning. They are amazing.

As if to emphasis this I have just been visited by two pupils who have made a poster for me. Upon reading it and with the knowledge that half term is approaching I thought it might be a  useful poster for us all!

Have a lovely half term.

Joe Porter

 British Science Week

In the next half of the term, we have British Science Week from the 6th to 13th March.  The theme this year is, 'Curiosity: What's Your Question?' Curiosity is at the heart of STEM, (science, technology, engineering, medicine), but also relates to music, sport, architecture and the arts.  We would like the children to have the opportunity to hear from parents in our school community about how curiosity has shaped their life and built their career.  If you would like to take part, please email the school and we will be in touch with further details.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - From our learning about the solar system this week, can you remember why we live on Earth but not on the other planets? (water, temperature (it's not too hot and not too cold), air to breathe so plants and animals can grow) How many planets can you name?

Year 1 – Which book by Nadia Shireen did you like the best: Billy and the Beast, Billy and the Pirates or Billy and the Dragon? Explain why.

Year 2 - Can you tell a recount of our trip to St Paul's Cathedral?

Year 3 - What is your favourite part of Arthur's journey across the sea? Why?

Year 4 -  The book we are reading is set on ‘Funfair Moon’. Imagine you could go to a planet which was about one thing. It could be wildlife planet, it could be a Minecraft planet, or something else. What planet would you visit and why?

Year 5 -  ‘A Clock of Stars’ – Would you like to carry on reading this book independently? Why/why not?

Year 6 - What would your character do in Narnia to help save it from the White Witch?

Attendance

Overall, school attendance this week was 92%. Our target is 97%.
