Headteacher Message

Hello all,

A busy and productive week here at Darell School. The day never drags here! On Thursday, we added to the surplus of rainfall with an outpouring of tears on Mr Harding’s last day. It is hard to lose such a popular member of staff and the emotions shown by many of our pupils show how loved he was and most importantly, what a good job he did. We are on the lookout for a replacement and have extremely high expectations of this person. We may currently be a member of the nurture team down at the moment, but nurture continues to run through everything we do at Darell School.

This week I had the pleasure of observing the teaching of Maths across the school. I have to say that I was extremely pleased by what I saw. Skilful teachers, motivated children and meaningful learning were seen across the school. There are leaders everywhere at Darell, from the office to the playground to the classroom, but I would like to say a big thank you to our Maths lead Rachel Carter. She has led the transformation of Maths teaching across the school, and we are lucky to have her. On that positive note, I now need to claim my seat for move night and settle in for the show. Have a lovely weekend with your families.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - 'How to Catch a Star', how does the boy try to catch a star? (jumps up, climbs the tallest tree, tries to lasso it with his grandad's lifebelt, use his rocket (but it's run out of petrol), asks a seagull).  Why can't we catch stars?

Year 1 –  Which animals sleep in winter? How many can you remember from the story? Can you explain what happens when winter ends?

Year 2 - How do you think Erin felt about Black Rock? How do you know?

Year 3 - What have you enjoyed most about writing your pour quoi story? Who would you recommend it to and why?

Year 4 -  What would you do if you were washed up on a desert island like the Wild Robot?

Year 5 -  'A Clock of Stars' - Who is Anneshka? What is 'fate'?

Year 6 - ‘Snow Leopard’ by Philip Gross: The poet makes up his own compound nouns to describe the snow leopard (moon-panther, cloud-cat). Can you create some more?
