Headteacher Message

Hello all,

I hope you are well. Two big events to celebrate this week. The people have spoken, and our school councillors have been elected. Speeches were completed, support was canvassed and votes were cast. I can reveal that the school councillors for this year are.....

  • Year 1: Aidee
  • Year 2: Roel
  • Year 3: Brandon
  • Year 4: Danielle
  • Year 5: Charlie
  • Year 6: Chad
  • SRP: Caleb

By all accounts, the speeches were excellent and everyone who stood should be proud of their ambition and efforts. I know, because I saw the votes for each class, many of the results were very close. We have got quite a lot of work to do this year, and we are going to be ambitious about what we can achieve.  Firstly, we are going to campaign to get the pedestrian bridge on the A316 fixed or replaced. I am hoping that their voice will give us the leverage we need with the local council. We are also going to be working closely with our lunchtime providers to ensure that children's voices are heard regarding the lunches provided. I often eat school lunch, and they are often very good, but we need to hear from the most important customers.

We also need to say a big thank you to the PSA for organising such a lovely International Day. And of course, to thank you all for providing the delicious food. I never knew that rice could taste as nice as it did yesterday and I managed to grab a few recipes. I also need to mention a lovely Albanian cake that I had. This is such a great celebration of our diversity. We only have approximately 200 children and yet there are 29 different languages from around the world. In my estimation, it is a different language for every 6.8 pupils that we have. It really is a strength of the school. It does not matter where you come from, it is Darell where you belong. I left work lifted with the time I had spent with you and your lovely children.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception -  Knuffle Bunny is Trixie's special toy.  If you could only keep one toy, which one would it be? Why is it so special?

Year 1 – How do you know Pip and Egg are good friends? What do Pip and Egg do to show they care about each other? Who is your special friend and why are they special to you?

Year 2 - What is your favourite poem and why?

Year 3 -  Which poem did you most enjoy listening to on National Poetry Day? Why?

Year 4 -  Is it better to make lots of mistakes and to learn from them, or to make no mistakes at all

Year 5 -  ‘The Girl of Ink and Stars’ - What happened to the map when it dropped into the river?

Year 6 -  Which poem from Joseph Coelho's collection Overheard in a Towerblock is your favourite so far? Do you have a favourite line in it?

SRP 1 -  We have been looking at the book 'This is me' by George Webster. Please share this story with your child and talk about what makes them special. OQ
