Headteacher Message

Hello all,

I hope you are well. We have been powering forward with our year long focus on ambition. I always think it is important to gather the views of our stakeholders when promoting an initiative across the school and this week we have been gathering the views of staff. An element of our staff meeting was time given to think about how we can be ambitious as a school this year.

The staff team here never let me down and here are a few of their suggestions:

  • Taking children and parents in Year 6 to visit colleges / sixth form / Roehampton, Kingston and other universities

  • Have people from school and the local community visit school to talk about their careers and the journey that they have been on to reach their positions.

  • Make links with other schools across the world. Find out about other cultures by interacting directly with other children.

  • Create a large team of volunteers to come into school, and listen to readers and support learning.

Now, it is the last one you can help me with. If you have an interest in coming in for a few hours each week, please come and let the office know. We will then get the wheels in motion.  In very simple terms, it could be just listening to children read out loud.  Why should you do this?

  1. You will truly be 'making a difference'

  2. It can be useful to put on your CV for future job opportunities.

  3. Our staff team are lovely, and they will welcome you with open arms.

  4. This one you know. Our children are lovely and will really appreciate your support.

  5. It will stop you watching reruns of ‘Homes under the hammer’

  6. Mr Porter will give you a biscuit (or a piece of fruit). Unfortunately, not of your choice!

Joking apart, I am aware that you all lead very busy lives, but please consider this and contact us if possible. I am going to be ambitious and say that as a result of this newsletter and other communications we will have 10 new volunteers in place before  half term. It could be You!!

Have a lovely weekend.

Joe Porter

Office Updates

Breakfast Club

At Darell, our Breakfast Club operates from 7:30 AM to 8:40 AM. You must book a spot at least 24 hours in advance for the session you wish to attend. All children need to be registered in order to participate.

Children from Reception to Year 6 who are eligible for the Pupil Premium grant are entitled to a free space in the Breakfast Club. However, you still need to book through Arbor for your child to attend the desired sessions.

We are unable to admit any children into breakfast club on the day unless they have a booking.

If you have any issues booking a session, please speak to a member of the office staff.

Thank you.

One of our pupils has a compromised immune system. With this in mind, we kindly ask all parents and guardians to inform us immediately if their child is diagnosed with any childhood illnesses, such as chickenpox, scarlet fever, slapped cheek syndrome, or if they experience sickness or diarrhoea.

Additionally, we request that you follow the recommended guidelines regarding school attendance. For instance, if your child has experienced sickness or diarrhoea, they should not attend school until at least 48 hours have passed since their last bout.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - In this week's story, 'So Much', Can you remember who rang the doorbell? (auntie Bibba, uncle Didi, Nannie and Gran Gran, cousin Kay Kay and big cousin Ross) What was the surprise? (Daddy's birthday party)

Year 1 - How did Black Bear feel at the beginning of the story? (lonely) Can you remember how he found a friend? What could you say to someone who looks lonely?

Year 2 - What would you like to ask Iris about her adventures in our class book (How to Hide a Lion)?

Year 3 - Why did Hortense's feelings towards Shadow change at the end of the story?

Year 4 - Talking animals is one element that many folk tales have. Can you think of any others?

Year 5 - What is a mechanimal? What does your mechanimal look like? Does it have special powers or skills?

Year 6 - The Girl of Ink and Stars - What is a myth? What is the myth of Arinta?
