Headteacher Message

Hello all,

I am back and this time I am better than ever!! Unfortunately, only the first part of the sentence is true. I am on the road to recovery, but it is feeling a bit like the M25 at the moment. Round and round in circles and a bit slow.  What has been lovely has been coming back into school. Firstly, the kind office team set me up with a standing desk, secondly Mrs Durrani brought me a hot water bottle and thirdly, my desk was covered with messages from your children.  Here is a selection.

It was so lovely to read all the messages that were focussed on letting me know what kindness they have been sharing with their family and friends in my absence. As I hope you know, we have had a year long focus on the word kindness and reading these messages I can see the impact it is having.

We will continue to focus on this for the remainder of the term, but next year we will have a new word linked to our values. The big reveal is that the word will be ‘happiness’. Watch this space for further information on this.

Tomorrow, for the first time in a number of years, we are going to be having a stall at the Richmond May  fair on Richmond Green. Please come and say hello to the team and enjoy what will be an excellent event.  Have a lovely weekend with your families,

Thanks,

Joe Porter

Darell Choir

The wonderful Darell Choir will be performing at Richmond May Fair tomorrow. They will be taking the stage at 1.40pm. Please do pop along and cheer them on if you can.

SEND Coffee Morning

Friday 16th May  Straight after drop off.

As well as providing an opportunity for parents to catch up with each other, we have Steph attending, who is an Education and Mental Health Practitioner from the Mental Health Support Team.  She is coming with a focus on anxiety in young minds.  She will be discussing what anxiety is, how to support young minds, how parents can support at home, as well as exploring techniques and strategies and recommendations around helpful resources.

All are very welcome – you do not need to be a parent of a child with an identified SEND need.

That was a longer message than usual, but we wish you a very lovely long weekend with your families, and we will see you all on Tuesday!

Office Updates

We are reaching out to share an initiative at Darell aimed at supporting our families during these financially challenging times. We have established a food bank within the school and would greatly appreciate any contributions.

Your donations can make a  difference in the lives of those in our community. We welcome contributions of non-perishable food items and personal care products. Every little bit helps and goes a long way in providing essential support to our families.

Please feel free to drop off your donations at the school office.

Thank you for your generosity!

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - What can you remember about the lifecycle of a frog? (egg or frogspawn/tadpole/froglet/frog/egg or frogspawn) Why do frogs lay so many eggs? (because there are a lot of predators and not all of the eggs/tadpoles/frogs will survive) Which animals like to eat frogs?  What do frogs like to eat?

Year 1 - In our story, Stuck, Floyd throws an orangutan ‘who surely had somewhere else to be’ up into the tree. Where do you think the orangutan was when Floyd found him and how did he catch him?

Year 2 - What happened when Marco posed his questions at the start of the book to the other foxes?

KS1 SRP - In our story, This Is the Bear. Where is the bear?

KS2 SRP - What colours would you paint your house which celebrates how unique you are?

Year 3 - How were How the Stars Came to Be and The Midnight Panther similar? How were they different? Which story did you prefer? Why?

Year 4 - How many different polygons can you name?

Year 5 - What did we find out about the struggle for equality in South Africa and Nelson Mandela’s role in it?

Year 6 - ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo – What do you predict will happen at the end of the book? Why?

Attendance

Overall, school attendance this week was 95%. Our target is 97%.
