Headteacher Message

Another exceptionally busy week at Darell!

We started the week with our year 4 residential to Thames Young Mariners. A wonderful time was had by all and the children lived our school values, fears were conquered and new experiences had. We want to say a huge thank you to the parents for preparing the children so well, but also to the staff who went with them. The staff at Darell go over and above for our school and this is a very fine example - sleeping in tents and leading by example, conquering their own fears in the water - thank you. Here are some comments from the children to show why we do it:

I really liked TYM because it was a really great experience. My favourite parts were kayaking and archery. At first, I was nervous, but I was looking forward to it. I liked our instructor, Scott, because he was friendly and helpful. The food was absolutely amazing and delicious. I would love to go again and TYM will always hold a special place in my heart.  Kate

I liked TYM because it was amazing. The most enjoyable thing was the stand-up paddle boarding. At first, I was scared, but I enjoyed it once I got used to it. The instructors were very kind and the food was very yummy. I would love to go a second time.  From Ruairi

Monday was also the day our Eco Team took part in the Eco Summit at the Wetlands Centre. This gave them a valuable insight into sustainability and what that means for us. They took part in a variety of activities; pond dipping and exploring habitats and learning about different ecosystems.

Year 2 (not year 6!!) went to the National Archives to enhance their topic on the Great Fire of London and year 5 followed them with a visit to develop their knowledge of Tutankhamun.

We have been welcoming different visitors to Darell this week. We have an excellent relationship with Roehampton University and have welcomed two students to our SRP. They are completing a SEND focus observation as part of their course. We look forward to having them back next week and, using Olly's words, 'It's so lovely to have you here'; couldn't agree more, Olly! On that note, I would like to thank Olly's mum and grandma for taking the time to come and plant herbs and seeds with our Walker class this morning - the children really enjoyed themselves; thank you!

Kelly took our football team out on Wednesday for the Battle of the Boroughs - winning is not everything - participation and team spirits is! The team lived our values of kindness and aspiration all day - they didn't give up!

The PSA have been busy behind the scenes organising the stall at the May Fair. Please support them in any way you can and look below for the information, and we thank them for their hard work.

Next week we will be marking the 80th anniversary of VE day. There is information below but a big shout-out to Tipene, one of our year 6 pupils who attended a remembrance service for New Zealand war heroes last Friday at Westminster Abbey. He read a prayer in front of thousands of people, including the Duchess of Edinburgh. What an achievement! We are so proud of you, Tipene.

The diary is getting busy, so please keep an eye on the dates below. I do want to draw your attention to a coffee morning that has been arranged for the 16th May at 9am with the Mental Health Support Team from AFC:

SEND Coffee Morning

Friday 16th May  Straight after drop off.

As well as providing an opportunity for parents to catch up with each other, we have Steph attending, who is an Education and Mental Health Practitioner from the Mental Health Support Team.  She is coming with a focus on anxiety in young minds.  She will be discussing what anxiety is, how to support young minds, how parents can support at home, as well as exploring techniques and strategies and recommendations around helpful resources.

All are very welcome – you do not need to be a parent of a child with an identified SEND need.

That was a longer message than usual, but we wish you a very lovely long weekend with your families, and we will see you all on Tuesday!

Office Updates

We are reaching out to share an initiative at Darell aimed at supporting our families during these financially challenging times. We have established a food bank within the school and would greatly appreciate any contributions.

Your donations can make a  difference in the lives of those in our community. We welcome contributions of non-perishable food items and personal care products. Every little bit helps and goes a long way in providing essential support to our families.

Please feel free to drop off your donations at the school office.

Thank you for your generosity!

Starting Tuesday, 6th May all lost property will be displayed on tables outside the office. Please take a moment to check for any of your child's missing items. Unfortunately, we are unable to store items due to space restrictions. Therefore, any items that are not collected by Friday, May 9th, will be donated to charity.

At Darell, we will be celebrating VE Day with a   non-uniform day when you can wear red, white, and blue, and enjoy a traditional British lunch of fish fingers, chips, peas, finishing off with jelly and ice cream.

Please join the Darell PSA at the Richmond May Fair (https://www.richmondmayfair.co.uk) on Saturday 10th May 2025 to raise funds and awareness of our wonderful school! We will be selling drinks, cakes, and pre-loved books.

We need parents, carers and pupil volunteers to run the stall on the day. We need at least 2 adult volunteers for each one-hour time slot. If you can help, please follow this link and sign-up for a volunteer slot:-

We are also asking for cake and pastry donations. Donations can be dropped off at school on Friday 9th May. Or if you are volunteering at the fair on the day, you can bring it with you during your time slot. We will have disposable plates and cutlery available for serving, so please bear this in mind when deciding what to bring. Cakes/pastries that reflect the culture of your country of origin are strongly encouraged to help celebrate the breadth of diversity within the Darell community.

Finally, we will be selling pre-loved children’s books at the fair to celebrate Darell’s love for reading! We will be accepting book donations until Friday 2nd May. Please drop off your unwanted books with Kelly at reception.

The May Fair is a great way to raise funds for additional resources and extracurricular activities for our school. A big thank you to everyone for your contributions!

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Reception - Why do you think ‘Lulu thinks bees are amazing?’ (They have different jobs: they spread pollen to make more flowers, they do a clever dance to tell other bees where to find the best flowers, they make honey from nectar)

Year 1 - If not a potato, what kind of animal was the small furry creature? (a mouse). Which animal group does a mouse belong to? (mammals). Can you remember some of the key features of mammals? (have fur or hair, breath air, have 4 legs/limbs, are warm-blooded, give birth to their babies)

Year 2 - What do you think the story of Gordon (The Meanest Goose on Earth) teaches us about kindness?

KS1 SRP - What are your special places? What makes them special?

KS2 SRP - Can you think of other reasons why the ‘Only Blue Allowed’ rule should change?

Year 3 - Do you think the Midnight Panther should try to be like the other cats? What advice would you give him?

Year 4 - Edward Tulane is about to go through many adventures which he will find uncomfortable. Do you think that having to deal with uncomfortable things might help him to grow?

Year 5 - What would you like to ask author Beverley Naidoo in your letter to her?

Year 6 - ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo – Do you think the boy was justified in going swimming against the old man’s instructions? Whose fault is it that he was hurt? Why?

Attendance

Overall, school attendance this week was 95%. Our target is 97%.

Well done to Year 6 for the highest attendance of 99.5% this week.
