Headteacher Message

Hello all,

It feels like we have reached a tipping point. The cold weather has gone and the days are very slowly beginning to get longer. Yesterday at 4.30pm, it was not quite pitch black! I remark and moan about the weather, but in truth, I like its unpredictability and extremes. My brother lives in Kenya, and the weather is very similar throughout the year. Great for the shorts selection, but when do you ever get that feeling of cosiness when it is freezing outside and you are nice and snug inside.

Talking about inside(most tenuous link of the year to date!) It was lovely to see so many of you inside the school building attending the Maths workshops. I managed to go and see the Reception session and was so impressed with the children who sat and worked with their parents for a considerable amount of time. It is so valuable to come in and see how your children are taught, and it has made me think that we should invite you in more often to see the excellent teaching that is taking place at Darell. I was lucky enough to see a piece of independent poetry written by one of our Year 6 children.  Have a look.

Last but not least, I would like to direct you to our Instagram account. We are very, very lucky that one of our lovely parents has agreed to help with the admin. It is way beyond mine or many of our technological abilities. All sorts of alchemy are taking place. Words move across the screen, and screens fold into each other. For someone who used to find it hard to navigate Ceefax, it really is impressive. Please take a look and become what they call a follower.

Have a lovely weekend.

Thanks,

Joe Porter

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In our story, 'Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?' Why can't little bear go to sleep? What does big bear do to help him go to sleep? (brings him lanterns to put by his bed, then takes him outside to look at the moon so that he isn’t scared of the dark) What do you do to help you go to sleep?

Peake - What was unusual about Albert's pet? (It was a potato.) Can you remember some of the things Albert and his pet potato liked to do together?

Weir - Can you summarise 'The Great Fire of London'?

Thunberg - How did the townspeople's opinion of Arthur change from the beginning of the story to the end? Why do you think this is?

Darwin - In 'Too Small Tola' What was the name of the nosy neighbour to told everyone what Tola and Grandmummy were doing?

Attenborough - What did you find out about Mars from the NASA website?

Parks - ‘‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by CS Lewis – What were Lucy and Mr Tumnus’s first impressions of each other?
