Headteacher Message

Happy Christmas to you all,

Festivities are aplenty here. Yesterday was the Christmas dinner where the whole school sat down in rows and ate together. Crackers, hats and bad jokes like every Christmas should be. It was a lovely scene. I am quite strict on teachers coming off timetables and spending the last week on purely Christmas activities and, to be fair to the team, they push through with learning right to the end. Right now I can hear the combined Year 2 and 3 party in the hall. A lot of joy to be had.

I have a favour to ask. In basic terms, if you see anybody with a child between the ages of 0-3, please approach them and tell them what a good school Darell is, and they should send their child there.  Obviously, if you are holidaying in Finland over the Christmas period, this is not such a good idea. The issue is the particularly low birth rate in our locality and the abundance of schools. It does not sit right with me, but we are effectively in competition with the schools that surround us. There are not enough children to fill the reception places that are available. I am joking about approaching strangers, but please do spread the word about Darell in any way that you can. The final date for applications is the 15th of January, and we need to ensure that if there are any undecideds that we decide them!

I would like to thank you all for being part of the Darell school community in 2024 and look forward to working with you next year. Here is a message from our chair of governors, Laura Morgan. I have been in quite a few schools in my time and this is the best governing body I have ever worked with.

Joe Porter

I hope everyone has enjoyed the multiple events being held by the school in the last few weeks. This time of year can be exhausting, particularly with the number of germs and viruses going round, but we have been able to enjoy Christmas performances worthy of the West End, concerts, sporting competitions and tournaments, the spectacular discos, Christmas lunch and parties. The children (and parents!) have had a wonderful time, but I think it is important to remember the amount of hard work and time that goes into holding these types of events alongside the normal day to day running of the school. Darell school staff have given up their own time to organise and run all these special events and activities and I would just like to extend thanks to them all — on behalf of the Governing Body and the wider school community - for all their hard work. This has been a long and very busy term and without such a dedicated and supportive staff team it would certainly not have been as successful and enjoyable!

I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable (and hopefully restful!) Christmas break and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on 6th January.

With very best wishes

Laura

Office Updates

   Eventful week!

This week, we have had many  festive activities, including class parties, Christmas movies and popcorn,  Darell Christmas lunch, Christmas raffle, non uniform day, community trips where we delivered gifts. Our SRP and Nurture children also attended the Beauty & the Beast pantomime. The last Christmas event is our "12 Days of Christmas" assembly, which the children are all looking forward to!

   School Meal Ordering Via Arbor

Last month, we implemented a new method for ordering your child's lunches using a Google Form. This change was designed to reduce food waste, ensure that students receive their preferred meal options, and minimize the teaching time lost in the mornings when entering lunch orders.

The catering team informed us that the chef was receiving meal options too late to prepare the correct quantities, leading to shortages and some children not getting the meals they ordered.

By allowing pre-ordering, we can inform the kitchen ahead of time, providing them with a reliable basis for meal preparation.

As this system has worked so well we have made a small investment in a system run through the Arbor parent portal for pre-ordering meal options. You can access this portal through your phone by downloading the Arbor app or logging in on a device.

Arbor has made the process of pre-ordering lunch options simple and convenient:

  • You can select your child's meal choices in advance, including packed lunches.

  • You can change these options up to 2 days before the meals are prepared.

  • You can view your child's daily meal selections on the portal.

To do this, please log in to your Arbor account, click on the orange "Quick Actions" tab in the top left corner, then select "Meals" and "Autumn/Winter Meal Choices." By clicking on the dropdown arrow, you will see a list of meal options, including the choice of a packed lunch. Please select your choice for the requested days.

All meal choices must be submitted by Friday, 20th December.

When we return in January, if you have not selected a meal option for your child, they will automatically receive the vegetarian option.

If your child requires a special dietary menu, please email us their meal choices, and we will update the kitchen staff accordingly.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - How many different things can you remember Stick Man is used for? Which part do you think is the most dangerous for Stick Man? Which is your favourite part of the story?

Peake - Why does the Jewish festival of Hannukah last for eight days and nights? (After the battle, the Jews only had enough oil to light the menorah for one night, but the oil lasted for eight). Can you remember some of the ways Jewish families celebrate Hannukah? (lighting the menorah, sharing food, playing dreidel, giving presents)

Weir - What might happen in a sequel (a book that continues the story) to Snow White in New York?

Walker - Can you remember any of the drinks Father Christmas drunk on his rounds in the story ‘Father Christmas needs a wee!’?

Newton - Can you name any of the animals that Zagazoo turned into?

Thunberg - Which book have you enjoyed reading most in class this half term and why?

Darwin - If there was a magic pill that meant that you could never fail, would you take it?

Attenborough - What did you like about the book Henry's Blog?

Parks - (Blitz poetry) Can you remember any of your blitz poem? What is a simile and can you remember one you used in your poem? Can you remember any other types of figurative language (POAMS)?
