Headteacher Message

Dear all,

I hope you are all well. Christmas has well and truly arrived here at Darell School. As I write, I can hear the final rehearsal of the Reception and Key Stage 1 Nativity. My family accuses me of being a bit unchristmassy at times, but for me, Christmas doesn't start until I see our school productions. Next week is going to be a treat. If you feel like warming up for next week's events, please come down and support our choir, who will be singing at Kew Sparkle this evening.  They are due to be on stage at 5pm, and they are going to smash it!  Please come and support them. Yet again, I have to say a huge thank you to all the staff involved in putting these productions in place and effectively saving the Porters' Christmas. It has been a long term and everyone is beginning to feel it, but you wouldn't know when looking at the organisation, encouragement and effort that goes into these productions. I am constantly in awe of the staff team at this school. Always going the extra yard.

Talking about being in awe. I walked into the Year 6 class on Wednesday and glanced at a display of their poetry. They have been writing poems about Darell school.  Here is an example:

A rights respecting school

Where everyone feels included

A voice is always heard

No matter the consequences

A tree that always sprouts

With every new diversity

Values are our thing

And dark blue is our colour

Overheard laughter, coming from the playground

Overheard bickering over silly little things

Kindness heroes everywhere you look

They have all made a difference

Just at least once

So, we invite you

To come and join in with the fun

It actually made me quite emotional reading this and the other poems. You strive to create something special when you work in a school and sometimes you see it in action.  Thank you Year 6 for inspiring all of us to make this school the best it can be.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In the story of the Nativity, why do Mary and Joseph stay in a stable when they arrive in Bethlehem? How does the shepherd find his way to the stable? How do the kings find their way to the stable?

Peake - What was the squirrel's treasure? (an acorn) Where did she bury it? (deep in the forest) When she returned after the icy winter, why was it nowhere to be found? (it had started to grow into an oak tree).

Weir - What would you like to ask Snow White's stepmother?

Walker - In the Christmas story, who was born in the stable?

Newton - How did the Evil Stepmother feel when she saw Snow White on the front of the New York Mirror?

Thunberg -What is a pourquoi story? Do you have an idea for your own story?

Darwin - What made Gregory Cool change his mind about liking Tobago?

Attenborough - Do you think Will will enjoy his time at Henry VIII's court?

Parks - ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ – Do you think Queenie is really Sukie’s friend? Why or why not?
