Headteacher Message

Good morning all,

Can I ask you a question?  Were you awoken at 5.30am this morning by a noisy flock of geese flying over your Tepee?  I am hoping not.  I have just returned from the Year 4 residential, at Thames Young Mariners.  They are having a lovely time.  For many of them, it is the first time that they will have been away from home, but you would not know it.  When I got there yesterday evening, I was regaled with stories of adventures on the high seas (well, the lake).  They went to bed on time and, unbelievably, the only noise that was heard through the night was the reassuring snoring of birthday boy Mr Shankar.  The staff team has been magnificent, facilitating participation from all.  I can say the behaviour of our children shone like a beacon from what my beady eyes were observing of another school on site.  The geese have given me some time to reflect and, as a dad and a head teacher, I have been thinking about how we sometimes place expectations on what we believe our children can do.  Speaking to and spending time with the children of Year 4 in a new environment is a timely reminder that the sky, minus the geese, is the limit.  Set them free and they will flourish.

Have a lovely weekend.

Joe Porter

Office Updates

Pupil Mobile Phones

To ensure a safe and focused learning environment, we kindly request that all children hand in their phones to the school office upon arrival and retrieve them at the end of the day. Only children who walk home from school in year 5 or 6 are allowed to have phones on site.

Author visit planned for Tuesday, 23rd April

We are delighted to announce that children's author 'Mrs P' will be sharing her newest book 'Jessie and JoJo' and running workshops with the children from Years 1 to 6. The story promotes positive strategies to deal with children’s worries and highlights the importance of friendships.

Mrs P will sign and dedicate books at the end of the workshops. Should you wish to purchase a copy of the book for your child to get signed, it will be available to purchase via Arbor, for £8.99. It will then be kept in school until the day of the visit and will be handed to your child. Please be aware we only have a limited number of books and so these will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Mrs P is donating 50% of the proceeds of the book to NSPCC (UK) and Wires (Australia). For more information, please click below.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - Why is the story called Jabari Tries? (because Jabari tries to make a flying machine, but it doesn't work at first) Have you ever invented something?

Peake - How did Dick the Delightful Duck's friends help to cheer him up?

Weir - Who are the InvestiGators, and what can you tell your grown up about them?

Thunberg - Which Greek myth have you enjoyed reading most? Why?

Darwin - How would you describe Edward Tulane?

Attenborough - What kind of journey do you think this will be?

Parks - ‘The Final Year’ - Was Nate’s experience of his residential (‘School Journey’) similar to yours? Why/Why not?

Truly epic! Yesterday, was the first concert of the newly formed Darell School rock band. Here is a clip of our lead guitarist limbering up. We would like to thank Rock Bandz for unleashing the talent that is within. Rock on! https://t.co/RYG3Soaa1j
