Headteacher Message

Hello all,

A very short set of messages today due to time constraints.  Firstly, thank you all for attending the parent-teacher interviews.  It was lovely to see so many of you in school.  I will continue to work on my cup and saucer skills as there was an unacceptable amount of drippage, and who knows next time there may also be biscuits on offer?  In the last two weeks, 100, yes, 100 students from Roehampton school have come to see the excellent maths teaching at Darell School.  Yesterday I received the following e-mail:

Dear Joe

Please can I extend a huge thank you from us at Roehampton for the support your school has given in running the maths project with our BA year 1 students. I have heard such good things about this project. We hope that these initiatives will prepare our students to be better teachers in the future. It will tie in really well with the work the students are doing at the university and help them to make stronger links between theory and practice as professionals in the making.

Please pass on my thanks to your team.

Best Wishes,

 Matthew Sossick

All the staff and students from Roehampton University were impressed with what they saw, and one student even offered to volunteer in Reception, as they were so impressed with the teaching that was taking place.

Last but not least, we have to celebrate the achievements of our after-school provider, Sonny Black, who appeared on television with his team, Cray Valley FC, and managed to draw against Charlton. He won man of the match.  We wish him the best of luck.

Office Updates

School Travel Plan Survey Scooter Silhouette Vector Art, Icons, and Graphics for Free Download

Schools are being encouraged by the Government to address increasing congestion on the “school run”.
As part of an update to our travel plan, we aim to look at practical ways to cut the number of cars used on the school run and to encourage (where safe to do so) active travel in the interests of our children’s health and fitness.

The school is now doing a travel survey amongst pupils and staff, and we would like to hear your views and suggestions as parents, too. Once the school has produced a Travel Plan and had it approved, we will have the opportunity to access funding grants to be spent on the school site for the benefit of the children.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions – we do need your views!

Darell Christmas Lunch

The annual Darell Christmas lunch is on Wednesday, 20th December. We are asking all parents to confirm if their child will be having a school lunch or packed lunch for this day. The numbers collected will be used to determine the amount of produce we need to order to cater for the children.

For the children who receive the special diet from Caterlink due to allergy restrictions, you can select the special diet option for your child if they wish to have a Christmas lunch.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - Which season is it now? How do you know? Can you remember any of the other seasons? What does the tree look like in each season? Find out which season your birthday is in.

Peake - Where did Leaf Man used to live? (in a pile of leaves) Where does Leaf Man go when the wind blows?  Can you remember any of the things he saw on his journey?

Weir - Where do you think Claude and Sir Bobblysocks will visit next? What do you think will happen there?

Thunberg - What do you predict will happen when the girl's father goes out to sea? What makes you think this?

Darwin - If you had a potion that could give you one wish, what would it be?

Attenborough - What did you find out about Hampton Court Palace from the children’s guide book, Power Palace? What is your favourite fact?

Parks - ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll – Who do you predict is the man that Sukie met during the air raid?
