Headteacher Message

Hello all.

Well that was the year that was.  I have to admit, I am sure like many of you, I am feeling a bit tired.  2020 has been a challenge to us all.  Throughout this period the school and our community has been my constant, my own personal source of motivation, inspiration and validation.  I really hope that it has been there for you and your families.  As we stand at the cusp of a new year I am filled with optimism regarding the direction of the school.  We have all the ingredients.  A settled, welcoming loving staff, amazing children and a supportive parental body who are working in partnership with us at every opportunity.  There are challenges ahead, but nothing we cannot handle together.  We have worked our way through an unprecedented crisis and emerged stronger than before.

For me our greatest achievement this term has been the happiness of your children.  Their wonderful resilience combined with our child centered approach has allowed them to flourish in these challenging times. I have been extremely lucky to lead a number of tours around the school recently and there has been superb learning taking place with quality teaching and motivated children in every class. Every family that comes to visit the school remark on how well behaved and calm our children are.  Perceptions of this school are becoming more and more positive on a daily basis.  I had a family visit last week who had recently arrived from a period living abroad.  They were impressed to the extent that they challenged other parents who said that they should not send their children to Darell.  They asked them why.  They had no answer.  There is no answer.  A historical perception of Darell still exists in some of the locality.  Quite simply we are going to smash this to pieces and Darell, as it is beginning to do, will be the school of choice for all in our community. We have recently added a welcome video to the homepage of our website.  Please take a look.  I think it really shows the warmth that exists at the heart of the school.

I really should list what we have achieved this term but I also need to look after my own and my families well being so I am going to sign off shortly.  I just have a few thank you’s to make.  Thank you to all of our amazing staff.  Every single one of the team.  It is truly humbling to lead them. Our children. Our motivation and inspiration, they have been magnificent.  And of course you.  Thank you all for trusting us with your children and working with us to ensure that we have not just survived but actively thrived during this period.

Have an amazing break.  Rest, reflect, and enjoy precious time with your lovely families.  We will see you all  in the New Year.  It is going to be a great year.

Wellbeing

We just wanted to remind everyone that here at Darell Primary and Nursery school we feel that wellbeing, including your physical and mental health are extremely important. We want to support the whole family during this time.
It is important that our parents and carers feel supported and well in themselves so the tips and links you will find within this section are to support adults and children.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more  about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Packham - What is your favourite book or story at school? Why?

Peake - ‘Parrots swoop beneath the moon.’ Can you define the word ‘swoop’? Can you think of a word that  could have been used instead of ‘swoop’?

Weir - Which book have you enjoyed most this half term? What did you like about it?

Mozart -  Stick Man got into some sticky situations in the story.  What happened to him?

Newton - What did Meg and Ash want to fill their nest with?

Thunberg - What would your? winter wonderland look like?

Darwin -  “Which of these is more harmful? Having a mirror that makes things look much worse than they really are, or a mirror that makes things look much better than they really are?”

Attenborough - Would you like to be Prince Edward's page?

Maths Challenge

There will ne a new Maths Challenge on Friday, 9th January 2021!

PSA

After a challenging first term for the PSA, managing lockdowns and changing COVID-19 rules, we still managed to successfully pull off many events and activities.  We have raised £2,500 that has gone towards our amazing purchase of 6 RUGGED  ROBOTS AND  16 MICROBITS and other school needs that can be decided in the new year.

Our Christmas activities were spread throughout December instead of a school fair and created a lot of excitement from the children when leaving classes.  Students were thrilled to purchase doughnuts, brownies, presents and cards.  It was nice to have a bit of festive spirit through the week since we couldn’t hold the usual events.

In the new year hopefully we can involve parents much more in planning and creating the activities.  The PSA will need all kinds of helpers, so please reach out to us and let us know that you are able to help.  It was especially difficult this year not meeting face to face, so please contact the PSA or your class rep to say hi!  Our email address is darellprimarypsa@outlook.com

A big thank you to all the parents that helped with the events, especially those who helped at the tables, contributed items, helped with the silent auction and spent many long hours packaging and preparing all the items for sale.  See you all in the new year!

Online Safety

Sitting down with your child and exploring their favourite app or game is a great way for you to learn more about what they like to do online.

You can ask them why they like to use an app or play certain games, as well as who they’re talking to and what sorts of things they’re sharing.

You can follow the online safety links for tips on how to keep kids safe on popular apps, sites and games.
