Headteacher Message

Hello all,

An exceptionally short update from me today.  I have just returned from the playground, and it has been lovely to see so many parents and children enjoying our soft end to a Friday.  It is a lovely way to end a very busy week.  I have been spoilt this week by the number of children coming to show me their exceptional work and, once again, I was lucky enough to work with Year 6, who spent the afternoon completing and sending emails to TFL.  Writing for a purpose is extremely motivating, and they worked really hard to ensure that TFL understands the impact the roadworks are having on them.  Please have a lovely weekend with your families.

School Governor Vacancy

Darell Primary School has a Governing Board dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for all our pupils. Some of us are parents of children currently in the school, some of us have had children attend the school in the past, some of us live locally, some of us live far away and some of us had no connection with Darell originally but want to make a difference to our community. We now have a vacancy for a Parent Governor which is an exciting opportunity to join our Board.
Schools have governors to ensure the smooth and effective running of a school and to ensure the headteacher is held to account. Governors oversee the management side of the school. They ensure strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing are all organised in the best way possible.
A governing board is made up of a diverse group of people who bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their own lives (not just from within education). They use those skills to benefit the school. They also get involved in the wider school community, playing the role of critical friend to Mr Porter and other senior leaders.
Fantastic reasons for becoming a school governor include:

  • Being a school governor is rewarding - you give back and make a difference to the young people at Darell. It’s a big responsibility, but you will know you are truly having an impact on the next generation, supporting them in their educational journey.
  •  You gain a variety of skills - a survey conducted by the City of London Governor found that volunteering for Governorship helped build respondent’s self-confidence, well-being, job satisfaction and motivation.
  • Networking Opportunities - Governing Boards should be diverse by design and, as a result, present lots of opportunities for networking and meeting new people who have similar values to you.
  • Gain knowledge for your school - You can gain invaluable insight from the governing board about how school communities run.
  • 5. Be part of the wider community - You will also get the change to know the wider neighbourhood. Darell is the heart of the community and this gives you the chance to meet other people who care hugely about the future of the children and the area.

Does that sound like you? If you are a parent/carer of a child currently attending Darell Primary and Nursery School and would be interested in becoming a Parent Governor please give your name and contact details to the school office.

Nasal Flu Vaccination  Kids Flu Vaccine – Greater Manchester

Your child’s flu vaccination is now due.
This vaccination is recommended to help protect your child against flu. Flu can be an unpleasant illness and can cause serious complications. Vaccinating your child will also help protect more vulnerable family and friends by preventing the spread of flu. There may be a rebound in flu levels this coming winter following low levels in the past 2 years as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

The vaccine can be requested as the injection form for those who do not wish to receive the nasal spray due to the presence of gelatine. The vaccination will still be administered at school.
Please complete an online consent form via this link: (one for each child)

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - What makes 'Mr Big' feel special? How many things can you remember? (the invitation, the band, his friends and fans, his car and new suit)

Peake - In the story 'The Deep Dark Wood' can you remember any of the characters who came to scare the girl? (a witch, a troll, a giant)

Weir - Where would you hide a lion in your house?

Thunberg - Do you think the girl will keep her promise? How do you think this will change the city?

Darwin - What adjectives (describing words) could you use to describe Paddington Bear? e.g. clumsy / kind.

Attenborough - Is Isabella doing the right thing by following Lupe into the Forgotten Territories? How can she convince Da that she has to do this?

Parks - ‘Street Child’ – What’s a workhouse, and why do you think no one would want to go there?

Kew The Transition  Kew The Transition

Kew The Transition is running its next Repair & Share event on 23 September from 2-5pm at The Avenue Halls, St Luke's Church, The Avenue. At this free, friendly event our team of volunteer ‘repairers’ will offer their time and advice to help our community have a go at reviving broken items. Our repairers can turn their hands and talents to things like small/household electronics (no microwaves), radios and lamps, toys, soft furnishing and clothes mending, and bike maintenance. If you can carry it in, we will try to help (within reason) or point you to where you can get other help. Full details at kewthetransition.org/events

We are also looking to add to our volunteer repairer team from our local community. If you have general repair know-how, specific expertise or a relevant hobby or enthusiasm please email kewthetransition@gmail.com
