Headteacher Message

Dear all,

You are reading the words of a very proud Headteacher and I will explain why.  I was aware that a group of our children were working in collaboration with The National Archives in Kew, but I was not fully aware of what the result of this work would be.  See below:

I was lucky enough to attend the opening night of this exhibition, and it was inspiring. I've learnt how integral our children were to the conception and setting up of this event.  They are named as co-collaborators, the inventors and inventions that are on show were only decided after workshops with our children. They also interviewed all the designers and made a film of their responses.  This high quality production is on show at the exhibition.

Please check out some footage from the museum on Twitter, and secondly please visit the event for yourself.  I am planning on making the day trip from Hampton with my three next week.  It is fun, interactive and most importantly it exists because of the hard work of our children. I forgot to say it is also free! Twitter feed https://twitter.com/DarellSchool

Do you want to save the planet?

I sometimes see these big questions and think of course I do but what do you mean? Well, in terms of doing our small bit, the ECO team at Darell are taking part in a borough project to reduce plastic consumption.

On a monthly basis, we are going to be providing refills of washing up liquid body wash and hand wash for you to buy from us. You bring a container, and we will fill it up. We have even purchased a card machine to make this possible.  More information will be provided after half-term but here is a poster made by Ruby from Year 6, so put the date in your diaries.

It has been a brilliant half-term.  Your children have been wonderful, and we look forward to seeing them after the sunny half-term break. A reminder that Monday, 5th June is an INSET day for staff only. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, 6th June at the usual time.

Enjoy your half-term break with your lovely children.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - From our reading of Jabari Jumps, what does Jabari do that shows us he is feeling a little scared? (squeezes dad's hand, lets other children go in front of him in the line, says he has to think, comes back down, stretches, says he'll come back tomorrow)

What does Jabari's dad do if he is feeling a little scared? (takes a deep breath and tells himself, 'I am ready')

Peake - Having used the Atlas of Animal Adventures this week, which continent would you most like to visit? Why? Can you remember some of the animals that live there?

Weir - What do you predict will happen now Marco and the crew have found the island?  Do you think all of the animals will find what they are searching for? Why?

Thunberg - What do you think happens to Bertie?

Darwin - If a book was written long ago and used language which today would be seen as racist or treating women as inferior to men, should we ban those books from our schools, put warnings on them or leave them as they are?

Attenborough - What would you have done in Tiro and Naledi's place during the pass raid in chapter "Police" of Journey to Jo'burg?

Parks - Why might ‘Clockwork’ be a tricky book for some people to follow? Clue - Fritz’s story
