Headteacher Message

Tomorrow our tag rugby team play in the knockout stages of the borough cup.  I am writing this on Thursday and will finish on Friday afternoon when I will share the result with you. They qualified having won two out of their three group matches.  This is big for us.  As a small school we are instantly at a disadvantage playing against bigger schools with two or three times the number of children to choose from.  Because of this we have run extra tag rugby training with an experienced coach and because of this and their hard work they have done really well.

Sport offers so much to all.  I am really pleased that as a school we have extended our clubs offer to increase the number of sports available. Karate and netball two of the new kids on the block.  I remember a government initiative when I was younger called Sport for All and I really believe that this should be the case.  Exercise, fresh air, sociability. It has definitely helped me with my mental health.  I still play competitive cricket and will do it while I can still stand!.  Sport being for all is emphasised at my cricket club where we run 6 teams on a Saturday.  You basically need a pulse to get in the 6th team! This is not to denigrate but to be clear that ability and talent do not have to be the primary drivers when finding happiness through sport.

I can now reveal the result of our cup match.  Our valiant team lost 8-2. Two of our key players were unavailable and both those who stepped in performed admirably.  We are also the first school to score against them this year. I am proud of each and everyone of them.

I really wanted to share some lovely work from Year 1.  I was having a walk around the classes and I came across a child focussing on his writing in Year 1.  Mrs Hayward then informed me that he arrived at the school earlier in the year with little or no English.  To be able to now write independently like this speaks volumes for his commitment and effort and the quality of the teaching in Year 1.

ECO Team Update

We are launching a new Make a Difference project led by our ECO Team! Our goal is to reduce use of single use plastics by encouraging refilling of household hand soap, body wash and washing up liquid from 5L bulk containers.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In the story of Tad, can you remember the words to describe Big Blub? (great, big, nasty, fish)

Where does Big Blub live in the pond (deep, dark, murky part) and where does Tad stay in the pond to keep safe? (shallow, sunny part)

Peake - Can you remember any of the things that Rapunzel saw in the forest? Choose three. Think of three adjectives to describe each of the things you have chosen.

Weir - What do you predict will happen next in The Antlered Ship? Do you think the crew will be successful on their voyage to the island? Why?

Thunberg - Would you like to live in the Amazon Rainforest? Why?

Darwin - Do you think having a ‘hard times jar’ to put money into is a good idea for everyone?

Attenborough - What surprised you in the chapter ’Oranges’?

Parks - In 'Clockwork', which character is optimistic and which character is pessimistic? Why do you think this?
