Headteacher Message

I am writing this week’s newsletter with festive tunes floating around the corridors as the children practise hard for their upcoming performances.  We are all looking forward to welcoming you to the different events over the next few weeks with the very first taking place after school today! Kew Sparkle is at 4:45pm in Kew village and our choir, led by the wonderful Miss Carter, will be the opening act! I hope to see lots of you there.

This week we have had a number of educational visits and sporting fixtures and on each occasion your children have lived our school values of Responsibility, Aspiration, Equality and Enjoyment. Our football teams had a disappointing result earlier in the week against a local school, but they demonstrated such teamwork and integrity and as a result enjoyed the matches. They didn't stop there, two days later they played at a larger local school tournament, smashed their first game and went on to win one more. We could not be prouder!

Over the year a great deal of work has been going into ensuring our RE curriculum is the best it can be, relevant to our community and demonstrating well sequenced and progressive learning from year to year. This week Year 2 visited  Hounslow Jamia Masjid whilst Year 1 learnt about Hanakkah, including how to play dreidel and cook latkes - which got the double thumbs up from the taste-testers!

Next week the enjoyment continues as we host a special author event with David Baddiel! He is visiting our KS2 children and children from Queen's school and Kew College will be joining us. There will be a book sale after school and information about this will come with the newsletter.  Year 1 are visiting Richmond Museum to learn more about the history of toys and KS2 classes are taking part in 'Be Internet Legends' workshops. One of our aims at Darell is to live our value of enjoyment and I hope this newsletter gives a flavour of how we do this. Happy children learn!

I am now off to help at the Debatemate club which runs every Friday and teaches our upper KS2 children the skills and techniques of debating.

Have a lovely weekend and hope to see some of you in Kew Village later to cheer on the Darell choir!

Author Visit - David Baddiel

On Wednesday, 7th December, we will be having a special visit to our school by the brilliant author/comedian David Baddeil.  He will meet the children in years 4, 5 and 6, and talk to them about his new book 'Virtually Christmas'. There will also be the opportunity for the audience to ask questions.

‘Virtually Christmas’, along with David's other books, will be available for sale at the end of day, which David is happy to sign personally for your child. Please come to the hall if you would like to meet David and buy a book.

Wellbeing

Improve Your Sleep

Feelings of uncertainty and changes to daily life may mean your child, you and members of your family are having more difficulty sleeping. There is a lot you can do to improve your sleep. Aim to go to bed and get up at the same time each day and try and get some natural sunlight by opening curtains, etc. This helps regulate your body and can help you sleep better. Also, wind down before bed by avoiding tablets, phones and computers an hour before bedtime.

Do Good December

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - How, and why did Olive and Cliff react differently to the planes flying overhead?

Peake - How do you think Major Glad and Major Dizzy would have felt when:

  • Amelia first dropped them through the floorboards?
  • They put out the fire?
  •  Milly and Billy discovered them after more than one hundred years?

Weir - Do you think the bear should go to the city with the girl and her father? What advice would you give to him?

Newton - Who is the kindest of them all?

Thunberg - Would you like to go back in time like the boy? When would you go to? Why?

Darwin - In ‘Custard the Dragon’, Belinda had pets with descriptive names, like Blink the mouse, Ink the black cat and Mustard the yellow dog. Think of a descriptive name for an unusual pet you might like to own.

Attenborough - Do you think you would have enjoyed meeting Henry VIII at Hampton Court like Will?

Parks - How, and why did Olive and Cliff react differently to the planes flying overhead?
