Headteacher Message

Hello all,

I have to admit that earlier this week I was feeling in a bit of a low mood.  I think it was the incessant rain and leaden skies. Luckily, I know how to lift my spirits and that is to do a duty on the Key Stage 1 playground.  It was such great fun.  Basically, I think we are all still big kids inside, and it is lovely to just return there every now and again.  I joined in with the games, made up some of the games and generally had a great time, which resulted in me returning to my desk with a big grin on my face.  Why am I telling you this?  Well, for one it is OK not to feel OK. We all have our ups and downs, and it is never a sign of weakness. Secondly, I wanted to share with you how lovely and inspirational your children are.  This job is challenging, but the children make it incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable.

Last Saturday we had a lovely open morning for prospective Reception children. In total, we had twenty families attend, which is double the amount from last year. Why?  Well, I think that word is spreading that Darell is a wonderful school with happy children and great staff. We are not perfect and while we know this is unobtainable we will continue to make this school as good as it can possibly be.

There are three weeks until the term ends, and they are busy weeks.  On Monday our Girls’ and Boys’ football teams make the short trip to Queen's for our first game of the season. We have a brand-new kit to show off and whatever the result we will be looking good. We also have an all day football tournament on Wednesday. We also have the Christmas fair and productions to come. Exciting times.

Have a lovely weekend. Look for the good and enjoy your time with your precious children.

Kew Sparkle

It gives me great delight to announce that our wonderful school choir will be performing at Kew Sparkle on Friday, 2nd December. They will be opening the event at 4.45pm and will be singing a selection of songs to entertain the community. It would be lovely to see as many of you there as possible.

Warm wishes,

Rachel Carter

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - What special features do owls have that make them excellent hunters?

Peake - What were the names of the two toy soldiers who remained hidden under the floorboards for over one hundred years? Can you remember any of the other things that were found under the floorboards with them?

Weir - How are Claude in the City and How to Hide a Lion similar? How are they different?

Newton - Was Claude really asleep?

Thunberg - If you visited the Giant's garden in the winter, what would you do there?

Darwin - The mirror in the ‘Snow Queen’ made people into pessimists (people who only see the downside or bad side). If you could make a mirror that would make people into optimists (people who only see the upside or good side) would you?

Attenborough - Did you expect the gruesome ending to the opening chapter of Monstrous Devices? Were there any clues as the chapter builds up to this ending?

Parks - 'Letters from the Lighthouse' - What do you think the secret note/code is about?

        Rose Youth Theatre Under 11's

At Rose Youth Theatre Under 11’s we develop the communication, literacy and confidence of our members via drama and the spoken word, as well as ensuring that every child feels their contributions to the group are valued and vital. Rather than produce ‘young actors’ our goal is to develop a rich array of life skills such as teamwork, leadership, public speaking, sophisticated literacy abilities, imagination, creativity, focus and an ensemble spirit!
We currently run classes every day of the week for anyone aged 5-11 (year reception - year six) at our rehearsal spaces in Rose Theatre, Kingston.
The cost of the term is £120, and we also offer a sibling discount and have bursary options available upon request.
“The Rose Theatre has been such a confidence booster for my child and has immensely fostered her passion. She absolutely loves it.” - Under 11s Parent, 2022
https://rosetheatre.org/rose-participate/rose-youth-theatre

With our new term starting in January, we hope the course will be of interest to students who would like to try a fun extra-curricular group, and wish to encourage anyone to join. Inclusion and opportunities are at the heart of what we do at Rose Participate, and as one of our open-access courses, there are no pre-requirements or auditions for the course.

Home Start

If you have some free time after Christmas, and you are a parent or grandparent, you could help other families with pre-school children. Local charity Home-Start is offering a free course to train you to be a home-visiting volunteer, supporting families with difficulties such as post-natal illness, bereavement or disability. The course will run in Whitton 9.45am-2.30pm, on Tuesdays from 31 January to 21 March (not half-term 14 Feb). After the course, you would visit a family for 2-3 hours a week. For more information, please contact Angie Ahmed  angie@homestart-rkh.org.uk or 07884 536161. Registered charity no: 1108975.
