Headteacher Message

It's finally Friday folks! The end of another busy week at Darell. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and carers who came to see their child's teacher this week. I hope you left feeling proud of the progress they are making, knowing how to support them with their next steps at home and how much the teachers understand and care for your child. I would also like to thank all the staff for working so hard this week.  Rest assured, they're all still smiling!

Today, we came together as a whole school at 11am to mark Remembrance Day with a 2 minutes silence. Raf, from year 6, played the Last Post which helped us mark this time as we remembered and reflected. This year, with the affects of war being felt much closer to home, we take time to think of the challenges facing some of our school families and how lucky we are to have been able to welcome them into such a happy and safe school.

To much merrier thoughts, myself, Laura Gavin and Joss Francis are planning a Darell Christmas Fair. It will be a low key event but an event none the less! Please find attached a poster with dates and times. KS2 will open the fair with festive songs, there will be seasonal films showing, the giving room and a tombola to name but a few stalls. We will be asking for help nearer the time to help with manning a stall and providing food donations for the international buffet but for now put the date in your diary: Tuesday, 13th December from 2-4pm.

In school next week we will be marking National Anti-Bullying Week. The theme this year is Reach Out, focusing on working together to eliminate bullying. The week is launched with Odd Sock Day on Monday, 14th November. We're inviting all children and staff to wear odd socks for the day to demonstrate that we are all unique (the brighter the better!) and addressing this theme in assemblies throughout the week.

Wishing you all a lovely restful weekend

Emma Claridge

Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day

Anti-Bullying Week 2022 will take place from 14 to 18 November 2022 and has the theme Reach Out. The week will kick off with Odd Socks Day on Monday 14th November, where adults and children wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique.
Bullying affects millions of young lives and can leave us feeling hopeless. But it doesn't have to be this way. If we challenge it, we can change it. And it starts by reaching out.
This year’s theme came about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, which coordinates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England and Wales. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.
At Darell, we consider this to be a very special week and an opportunity to celebrate not just the respect we have for each other, but also the differences, and the similarities, that exist between us.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In our story, 'Pumpkin Soup', how could the cat, the duck and the squirrel make sure it's always 'peaceful' in the old white cabin?

Peake - How did Ray help Ben? Why do you think they were such good friends?

Weir - Do you think Sir Bobblysock's name is really Sir Bobblysock? Why do you think Claude calls him that?

Newton - How did Claude feel after saving the day?

Thunberg - Would you like to visit the giant's castle? What do think you will find?

Darwin - In ‘Professor Puffendorf’ the Professor invented potions that could change a person when they drank them. What potion would you invent?

Attenborough - Who is Brother John in Treason and why does Aunt Carew say his presence in the house puts everyone at risk? Is Aunt Carew good news or bad news? Do you think Will will like it at court??

Parks - ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ – How do you think Olive and Cliff are feeling in Budmouth Point, and why??

Roblox – updated PEGI rating

PEGI have announced a change to the age rating for Roblox. PEGI used to rate Roblox as 7+, however because of the huge level of user generated content within Roblox, PEGI have changed the rating to a Parental Guidance label (icon shown right). You can read more about this change here:

https://pegi.info/news/pegi-changes-rating-advice-roblox

What is Roblox?

You can either use Roblox to create games or play games that other users have created. As a lot of the content is user generated, it may mean not all games will be suitable for your child to view/play. It is important to set up Parental controls appropriate to your child.

Allowed Experiences - NEW
Roblox has introduced Allowed Experiences, which allows you to select age-appropriate experiences, so your child can only join experiences that match their age set. Please note that experiences above the age restriction set may be seen in search results. Age categories available are 9+, 13+ and all ages. You can find out how to set up Allowed Experiences here:

https://en.help.roblox.com/hc/en-us/articles/8863284850196-Allowed-Experiences-Controls

What should I be aware of?

Chat Facility - Players can chat to each other on Roblox. You can add parental controls to turn this feature off completely or add restrictions.
Virtual Currency - Players can buy Robux (their virtual currency) to buy in-game upgrades or accessories. If you do not want your child to purchase them, then ensure you set the Monthly Spend Restriction to zero.
Game content – as mentioned, games are created by different users so sometimes the content may not be appropriate for your child.
Blocking users and reporting – ensure your child knows how to do this.

What should I do?

• Play the game with your child.
• Explore the parental controls within Roblox and set as appropriate.
• Show your child how to use the Report Abuse system within Roblox
to report inappropriate content and how to block other users
