Headteacher Message

Hello all,

Well. We have successfully navigated the monsoon season and summer is surely on its way.  It was lovely to have an impromptu pop up lake in the playground yesterday but also a relief when the drains finally cleared.  We have quite an old building (1906) and it does not respond well to extreme weather.  Thankfully, we have Michael who is undoubtedly the best site manager in the world. Any issues we have are swiftly and efficiently resolved. I have been in education for a long time now, and it is fair to say that site managers are normally characterised by their lack of motivation and lack of humour.  Not Michael. He is another vital cog in the wheel that makes us successful.  I sound like a broken record, but we truly have exceptional staff at this school.  We had an INSET day on Monday, and it was lovely to come into the hall and see this:

A very big thank you to Lucy Brett who was asked to come up with a way of presenting our values in an eye-catching way and truly delivered.  We are very lucky to have Lucy working at the school.  She is our artist in residence and runs Picture Book Club and Make Club.  She really goes the extra mile for the school and just this week I was informed that she had been working 1:1 with some of our SEN children who find big groups difficult.  Thank you, Lucy, for ‘Making a Difference’.

On Wednesday I took our new Debate Mate team to the launch of the competition in London.  I love these trips.  Trains, great landmarks and a chance to really chat with our lovely Year 5 and 6 children.  Debate Mate allows us to celebrate how well we teach oracy at Darell School.  We want every child to be a fluent and confident speaker when they leave Darell School and competing against other London Schools in judged debates allows us to further develop these skills.  Schools are judged by a number of measures and I have never really understood why the ability to speak confidently is not assessed with the other focus areas. Regardless, we think it is important and will keep developing the oracy skills of all of our children.

Next week we will be having parent meetings.  Please make every effort to attend.  We talk about working in partnership and this is a great opportunity to build a relationship with your child's teacher to ensure that your child continues to thrive at school.

Have a lovely weekend with your precious children.

Joe Porter

Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day

Anti-Bullying Week 2022 will take place from 14 to 18 November 2022 and has the theme Reach Out. The week will kick off with Odd Socks Day on Monday 14th November, where adults and children wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique.
Bullying affects millions of young lives and can leave us feeling hopeless. But it doesn't have to be this way. If we challenge it, we can change it. And it starts by reaching out.
This year’s theme came about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, which coordinates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England and Wales. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.
At Darell, we consider this to be a very special week and an opportunity to celebrate not just the respect we have for each other, but also the differences, and the similarities, that exist between us.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In our story, Pumpkin Soup, what is the job of each of the animals, and why does the squirrel get upset?

Peake - What is a memory? Can you remember any of the things that Wilfred chose to put in the memory box? Why did he choose these items?

Weir - Where do you think Claude and Sir Bobblysock should go on an adventure? Where would you go if you were Claude?

Newton - Where did Claude & Sir Bobblysock visit first?

Thunberg - What do you think the most interesting thing the eagle could see is and why?

Darwin - In the story we are reading, ‘The Thieves of Ostia’ Flavia’s father said his signet ring was stolen from his desk. The guard dog had not barked and nothing else had been touched. What do you think might have happened to it?

Attenborough - What tragic accident happens in Will’s family at the start of the book? Do you think Will is responsible for it??

Parks -  ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ – Describe the children’s experience on the train to Budmouth Point. Why were they going there?

Viewing films safely online

It is important that our children are watching films that are suitable for their
age. The BBFC is the UK’s regulator of film and videos and they have created
this useful article answering the questions they get asked the most.

Online games

Is your child playing or watching others play games online? Your child could be using Twitch, Steam, Roblox, YouTube etc to access games or watch others play. We need to make sure that what they are viewing is appropriate for them. It is important to talk to your child to see what they are interested in so you can have a look first to see if they are appropriate. For example, there are games that may appear to be appropriate but are actually horror/ survival games and characters can turn more sinister as the game progresses. It is important to remember that children may be playing the game, watching videos of it on sites such as YouTube or playing replicated versions on Roblox for example.
