Headteacher Message

I hope the week has been good to you, and you have a lovely weekend lined up. Today, I had some special visitors to the school.  A number of Richmond Headteachers and the Head of Education for the local authority came for a meeting.  I am telling you this because they were extremely positive about our amazing school.  They commented on the excellent behaviour of our children and the learning environment that we offer.  We are now at the stage of the year when routines have been embedded, and quality learning is taking place.   We are already looking forward to inviting potential new families into the school for Reception 2023 and not only will we be able to share our welcoming school community but can talk to our recent academic successes.  I would like to share these with you.  In the data you see below the national averages are in brackets.

The government sets an expected standard that children should leave at.  Our Year 6 cohort showed once again that it is possible to nurture the whole child and still achieve academic success.  In fact, I would say that the two go hand in hand.

Year 6 2021/22

Reading 84% (74%) at expected standard.  Achieving higher standard 34%

Writing 88% (69%) at expected standard. Achieving higher standard 25%

Maths 84% (71%) at expected standard. Achieving higher standard 44%

This is provisional data but are not expecting any changes.  Please shout this from the rooftops.  We are sometimes unfairly seen as a non-academic school and this is simply not the case.  Every child at this school is given the opportunity to meet their full potential no matter what their starting point is.  The nurturing environment we have allows us to do this.  Time for me to step down from my soap box and return to the newsletter.  Also time for me to go home to my family.  So, all that is left is for me to say is have a lovely weekend and stay safe.

Your child’s flu vaccination is now due.
This vaccination is recommended to help protect your child against flu. Flu can be an unpleasant illness and can cause serious complications. Vaccinating your child will also help protect more vulnerable family and friends by preventing the spread of flu. There may be a rebound in flu levels this coming winter following low levels in the past 2 years as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

Wellbeing

Look for What's Good

Positive emotions - like joy, gratitude, contentment, inspiration, and pride - are not just great at the time. Recent research shows that regularly experiencing them creates an 'upward spiral', helping to build our resources.
So although we need to be realistic about life's ups and downs, it helps to focus on the good aspects of any situation - the glass half full rather than the glass half empty.

Relaxation Activity:

Flower and Candle

This simple relaxation exercise encourages deep breathing to calm and soothe. Pretend you have a nice smelling flower in one hand and a slow burning candle in the other.

  • Breathe in slowly through your nose as you smell the flower.
  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth as you blow out the candle.
  • Repeat a few times.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In our story, I Love You, Blue Kangaroo, why does Lily give her baby brother all of her new teddies?

Peake - Why do you think the lions wait until ‘the sun begins to set, and the air grows cooler’ before they go hunting? Can you explain the meaning of the word prey?

Weir - What would you do if you saw a lion strolling into Richmond to buy a hat?

Newton - Why did the townspeople run away?

Thunberg - How would you feel if you had to make your home vanish?

Darwin - Would you prefer to be a person who makes very few mistakes but feels really bad about the mistakes you make, or someone who makes some mistakes and treats them as a way to learn?

Attenborough - How can Isabella convince her dad that it is the right choice to follow Lupe into the Forgotten Territories??

Parks - Why do you think that Mrs Gee is so lonely?

Jessie & Friends

Online Safety  for 4 - 7 Year Olds

Children are accessing technology and the internet at a younger age than ever before. It’s never too early to talk to your child about what they do online and who to tell if they come across anything online that makes them feel worried, scared or sad.

Jessie & Friends is a series of three animations that follow the adventures of Jessie, Tia and Mo as they begin to navigate the online world, watching videos, sharing pictures and playing games. There’s also a storybook for each episode, to help you and your child keep the conversation going.

Play Like Share

Keeping 8 - 10 Year Olds Online

Play Like Share follows the adventures of Alfie, Ellie and Sam as they form a band and enter their school’s Battle of the Bands contest, taking on the mean but ‘cool’ Popcorn Wizards as they go. The three friends learn that while the internet can help, they need to use it wisely and safely.
