Computing
‘Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.’ Steve Jobs
Intent
At Darell, we believe in inspiring children and allowing them to discover their own potential by creating a stimulating and safe learning environment full of awe and wonder. Computing is a subject all children are fascinated with, and we aim to inspire future users and designers of increasingly complex computer technology that navigate the digital world with confidence and ease.
In line with the 2014 National Curriculum for Computing, our aim at the Darell is to provide a high-quality computing education which equips children to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.
Implementation
Each child at Darell from Year 2 up to Year 6 have their own Google Chromebook that remains in their classroom, which means that they are able to use their Chromebook across the curriculum, further developing their computing skills.
The curriculum will teach children key knowledge about how computers and computer systems work, and how they are designed and programmed. Our children will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of computational systems of all kinds.
At Darell, our children learn key knowledge and skills in the three main areas of the computing curriculum: computer science (programming and understanding how digital systems work), information technology (using computer systems to store, retrieve and send information) and digital literacy (evaluating digital content and using technology safely and respectfully).
Link to our values:
-
Every child will have equal access to the curriculum. They will have their own computer to access their learning whether at home or in school - Equality
-
Teaching children to remain safe online - Responsibility
-
Children with a greater interest and expertise in computing are encouraged to develop this in our UKS2 Code Club and to disseminate their knowledge through peer support within and across year groups. - Aspiration
-
Pupils will have the opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge that they learn in computing and at home in other areas of the curriculum - Enjoyment.
Impact
By the time they leave Darell, our children will have gained key knowledge and skills within each strand to support the development of learning and ensure a solid grounding for future learning and beyond. Our curriculum gives the children the necessary skills to keep themselves and others safe online; the safety of our children is paramount.
